Is there any way to copy an effect from an object to another (as you can do on photoshop with layer styles)?

Style swatches. Can't offer you the details as I'm in bed, but that should get you started, I hope.

make all your effects using the 'Effect' drop down as opposed to 'Filter'. Now go 'View - Graphic Styles'. When you have the styles you want, select the object you want to base your styles on and go go to the graphic styles palette, click on the wee right arrow and select 'New Graphic Style'. Name it whatever you like and select a new object and click on the graphic style you've just created, and it will apply those styles to the new object.

Or make a new layer, put new artwork (which you want styled) into this new layer, then select the effect in the layers palette, option-click on the effect and drag it up to the new layer, this will apply the styles to everything in the new layer.
- Ive used the words 'effect' and 'layer' too many times here I think.ian
