Seven percent of the visitors to the site I'm working have their screen resolution set to 800x600. At what percentage should I just give up on these folks and design for a 1024-width monitor?

7%!

i would have given up around 2001

I started designing for 1024x768, it's time to move on now....this has become the new standard.

Design for 1024x768.
What demographic are you aiming at?

the problem is that it's a government site. additionally, a significant portion of the audience using the 800x600 screen size are students (k-12). there's no requirement for the site to be 800x600, so a fluid layout could be a potential solution...
i really just want to add 200 pixels to my designs and see who says something.
- Whoever contracted you should supply audience guidelines, if it's a gov't job. I'd expect to still cater for 800*Nairn

I'd do 800px. Definitely.

try to make fluid layout, if you have time; it means, that you have to use percentage values instead of pixels; it is quite tricky;

javascript res. detector? - always thought it was interesting -- example: http://www.newzealand.com/travel…
right column moves below main content on smaller browser windows

I think people who will actually use an 800x600 screen have low expectations anyway...
- haha - good point
- though my pc laptop's res. isn't a whole lot higherbulletfactory

Whats the "view able" size that you set when designing for 1024?
Like 960px width? etc.
- numero10
849 ? Thats heaps taken of 1024!
- For Win Vista of course!

It's interesting to note that 1280x1024, 1280x800 have a combined share noticeably larger than 1024 these days (at least on all our analytics).
More screen real estate can only be better for us designer types.
However there is a scary number people still using ie6.

A bit OT:
How accurate is w3schools. A programmer reckons is based on designers and developer and not the whole world. We were talking about IE6 going down and FF having more users but he said they are more accurate 'studies'. But he didnt specify he just said from the news!
Does anyone know?

get with the times dude! :)
design for 1024,
but try to keep the most important content on the left, just in case.
- mistermik0
just design for 900 wide - plenty of room.
