In 2006 Harper pushed for legislation that would set fixed election dates. The legislation passed:
"Fixed election dates prevent the government from calling snap elections for short-term political advantage... They level the playing field for all parties and the rules are clear for everyone." ... "Fixed election dates stop leaders from trying to manipulate the calender simply for partisan political advantage."
-- Stephen Harper, 2006The next fixed election date? October *2009*.
Hypocrite! When Harper says parliament isn't working it means he can't ram through his scary rightwing ideology in minority status. He wants a majority so he can ban gay marriages, revoke women's rights, and sell the country to McCain.

oh fuck this is some heated shit with the american election going on aswell.
- hellopush0
even if it gets heated, we will end up apologizing to eachother... you know... being canadian and all :)

Apparently CNN had a story about our election. Where do they have the time?

i normally vote NDP ...but this time out, i think i'll throw a bone to the Liberals....
Even if (god forbid) harper wins again, i definitely don't want him even remotely close to a majority....
if we can't vote him and his part all the way out, at the very least he and his party should be marginalized- i find people vote against the party they dont want in power, insted of voting for the party they do want.ross
- KwesiJ0
uh did the stratigic voting thing last time and i regret it, i'm voting NDP or Green this time...I'll wait and see how it plays out and who the local people are etc.
- KwesiJ0
the way i see it it's not about marginalising or voting 'against' the other side its about supporting who you beleive in.

voting NDP or Green isn't a wasted vote. every vote accounts for money and support. they will receive for the next elections by well... elections canada.
green party is more and more organized in part of the voter turn out for them last elections. if it keeps on increasing they'll continue to have a bigger and more important presence in ottawa. therefore, with time probably, the other parties will have no choice but respect them.
what pissed me off was what harper and layton said about Elisabeth May. flat out said there's no way she'd run for the job of Prime Minister and only for the environmental minister. and questioned her purpose for a televised leadership debate. if that's the case, then why are the letting the Bloc participate? I might be wrong with the numbers, but the greens have members representing themselves in ALL of the electoral counties!

canadian stereotypes i've never understood or noticed:
- self loathing and or insecurity.
- being TOO nice...as opposed to just being like small town nice or more personable people like a lot of the world.

allthough its unlikely to happen it would be cool to see elizabeth may defeat peter mackay.

Fanco - Quebec would burst into flames if the Bloc was excluded from leader debates.
Layton has since changed his mind and said May could attend, and the Cons say they won't boycott if she's there and the NDP are ok with it. I don't know what the Libs and BQ think about this yet.
I'm pro democracy, so I can't help but cringe when I see politicians trying to suppress democratic action.

People who shift their vote away from one of the left leaning parties (Green, NDP) and vote in order to keep their least favorite party out of power have always made me angry. Using the argument that a vote for the NDP or Green is a wasted vote because they never have a chance of winning is just going to become self fulfilling. Vote for who you really believe will do the best job, even if it's just for the principal of it..... otherwise we might as well go to a two party system like our lovely neighbours down south.

i've heard of people organizing (through facebook or whatever) a vote swap. (sounds kinky eh?).
The concept of the vote swap is "simple" : in the last election some ridings were decided by only a few hundred votes. The aim is to make sure that the party with the best chance of beating the Conservatives in any one riding is able to do so. So if you live in a riding (i.e. rural Alberta) where the NDP stand no chance, why not swap with a a Green Party voter who will then vote NDP in his/her hotly contested riding...maybe that would be enough to tip the scales in the NDP's favour. Perhaps you live in Winnipeg South and support the NDP. During the last election, that riding was decided by less than 140 votes between the Liberals and Conservatives, so the Liberals clearly have the best chance of stopping that seat from going to the Tories. Thus, it makes sense to trade out your NDP vote with someone who votes Liberal. They would then agree to vote for the NDP in their riding.

Debates are on the same day as the U.S.A. debates. iiiinteresting.
I guess people will be watching the U.S.A. ones and maybe switching to the Canadian ones during commercials? hah.
At least all 5 parties get to debate this time around.
- Liberal
- Conservative
- NDP
- Bloq
- Green
