f*ck knows how my mate managed to get his wife to agree to it but she did. we used to tamper with our XR's back in the day (when engines were simple carborator things), so think he maybe persuaded her that if anything went wrong with it he could fix it on the cheap or with bits from scrappys - hence saving money rather than having to go to garages and get them to fix stuff.
I really wish i had my old xr2. it was mint showroom condition, when i had it was about 10 years old, whenever i took it in for MOTs, mechanics would be amazed that it was a 10 yo car. only had 60,000 on the clock, nice spoked alloys (not the standard pepperpots) and spaz adjustables allround keeping it glued to the deck :)
