  MrDinky ... yes. For night shots I use a tripod or stable object. Funny what you can find to rest your camera on.

  I don't like monopods, because you need to hold them. I drink way too much coffee through out the day to have stable hands. I have a big gnarly tripod that weighs about a 1/2 ton, I took some pics up at Mt. Hood with gusts above 30 MPH with 30+ seconds exposure, flawless clarity. Monopods are really awesome when you got a huge lens (10+ pounds) or if you are shooting during the day with low shutter speed. (1/60 - 1/10).

  I use Canon (only, I am a die hard, I know, I know). 40D is my tag along camera, but for client needs I will rent a Mark III or 5D. I shoot in raw, and use Lightroom 2 in conjunction with Photoshop for final color correction.
