So If I search on Flickr for an image and find the perfect one do Flickr hold any rights over that image as it is on their site.
Could I just contact the photographer and say "how much for xxxxx image?" or would flickr have an issue.
Also has anyone ever been contacted by a person wanting to use there image and how much would someone charge?

each photo should have the licensing information on the detail page. I use a creative commons licence on my photos and people have contacted me to use them. I allow it as long as I get credit and the image is not altered in any way. It's different for every photographer.

we contacted a swiss or belgian photographer (can't remember which) on flickr for permission to use this--it was the only image we could find for this guy

I've only used it for snaps and family stuff.. and just signed up a few weeks back.. I did put up some of my artwork up there, but only 450 pix... If you find out any info on rights please post, as I would not want people just grabbing images and using them.. but would be happy to work something out...

from Flickr's help section:
How can I copyright my photos? In most parts of the world, including the U.S., Canada, EU countries, and Japan, you are automatically granted copyrights to your photos.
However, the nonprofit Creative Commons offers six default licenses as an alternative to full copyright so you can choose the one that best suits your needs.
http://creativecommons.org/Remember that you can only copyright images that you own. This means you can't copyright images that you've taken from somewhere else! Additionally, just because an image does not have a Creative Commons license attached to it, doesn't mean that it is public domain.

If the photographer has All right reserved you need to contact him/her in order to modify the licence and to share it with you...as said above you would need to credit the author of the image....Just go to FLICKR and e-mail the photographer to get permission...
