My dad said after visiting he'll never go back. He also has no interest in visiting any other part of Mexico.

I have been there and it's great.
Mexico is one of the countries (in the american continent) with some of the richest history, but you need to have your head ready for it.If you are looking for cheap tequila and ugly bars full of tourists, then chances are you are only ready to go to Avenida Revolucion in Tijuana.

And all this propaganda being fed by people that never went there about getting robbed..
man..
if you are a tourist and you look like one, you can get robbed anywhere in the world, just try not to be flashy and stay out from shady places. Like on any other part of the world.

you'd go over halloween and miss good parties?
*slaps head*
does "day of the dead" mean anything? if not google it.
Yes, the atmosphere burns your throat, and the city is a sprawling mess but it's a great place - lots to see and do. but as meeklo says if you jst wanna get drunk and fall over, don't bother - go to tijuana

^^ What Meeklo said.
All the negative things you hear from Mexico are in a way myths or simply exaggerated. Water problems? I never had problems in the 2 decades I lived there. Don't wanna get mugged? Act normal. period.
It depends a lot on your level of acceptance for different things. I've known a lot of people that visit Japan and only come back with complaints about how it's impossible to live there coz they speak no English, or coz they are very serious, or coz it feels so claustrophobic and cold... But I've been there and loved it and could spend the rest of my life there.

Bump.
It's good to hear some of this. I was more concerned about crime than actually missing parties. That and I'm trying to convine my wife to go as well. I love seeing new places and traveling. I've been on about 15 trips alone this year, so cultures don't freak me out, being kidnapped does :)
Anyone else... thoughts?

I went two yrs ago and toured the city plus all the areas around very worthwhile trip, saw ruins, visited the "silver city", saw alot of churches of course and churches that were a mix of paganism and christianity. Interesting stuff! My mom does speak Spanish so that helped. Sorry I don't know if crime is bad now. I had no problems then.

been there loads of times. lots of wonderful cultural things to do, people are great, food is amazing. i hated the pollution and my throat hurt/eyes itched every time i went there, which was usually in the winter. make sure you visit teotihuacan which is about 30 miles north of d.f. it's huge and amazing.

I like other parts of mexico better than DF, but it is an amazing place. I was only there for a few days, and had my 3yr old in tow, so my activities were limited. I was in Zona Rosa, had amazing food and walked all through Chapultepec park. My son is blonde and got tons of looks. I felt a bit buffered by the realities of the city because of where I stayed, but got a little glimpse of the extreme poverty driving north out of the city.I enjoyed taking it i, but was ready to leave as well. I prefer smaller mexican towns.

i agree with what all these guys have said...
stay out of dark corners at night and try to speak some spanish, even if it's a bit. people really appreciate the effort and you will be pleasantly surprised in the fact that people are wonderful there. yes don't plan on driving because it's crazy, don't flash your big cameras keep it mellow. there are tons of tourists you won't be the only one.
"dia de los muertos" festivities will be happening all around Mexico so you'll get a feel for that which is so much fun, i was there last year, visit "coyoacan" if you can.
if i was you i wouldn't miss "Teotihuacan" of course! and the "Museo de Antropologia" to get a feel for pre hispanic culture, plus the "Castillo de Chapultepec" (which is right next to the museum) to get a feel for what the Spanish brought to Mexico. also the "templo mayor" in downtown, and if you get a chance get out into the country and visit "Tepoztlan" you will not regret it.
oh yeah the food is fantastic so enjoy your stay because there is no place like it. cheers!
