Putin wins 107% of the vote in Chechnyan district
Vladimir V. Putin did well in Chechnya, a place that he virtually declared war on after becoming president in 1999, and whose people have suffered grievous human rights abuses at the hands of Russian security forces. The final tally: Putin, 1,482 votes; Gennady A. Zyuganov, the Communist Party leader, one vote.
This result was in itself statistically improbable. But even more difficult for the teachers who had been drafted onto the electoral commission to explain was the turnout: there were only 1,389 people registered in the precinct, meaning that the turnout was 107 percent.

The problem is not JUST corporate greed or JUST the gov't, whhipped. It's both, often working in tandem. It's people seeking power, whether through acquiring money or acquiring a role in the government, and using that power to grab more money and/or power.
And sometimes it's not even that. Sometimes it's well-intentioned politicians, believing that they are serving the interests of their constituents, with no thought of personal gain, and either being deceived or misguided. And let's not forget the fact that not EVERYTHING the gov't does is detrimental to the people as a whole.
Believing that corporations, left to their own devices without regulation, would do the right thing is as pollyannaish as saying "we should all just take care of each other" and believing that it's going to come easily.
What i think is key is encouraging people in a non-partisan way to take a more active role in their government, on whatever level they feel most important. That means knowing what's going on in the house and senate and speaking up to your elected officials when you disagree.
But even if we had 100% citizen participation in elections and the like, it would mean NOTHING if corporations were still able to pour millions into election coffers in order to buy influence. Hence, that should be regulated.
Because it all starts there. If a corporation can't buy a politician, they can't, by proxy, introduce legislation that allows them to operate in a way that is detrimental to the people, be they employees or consumers. If they can't do that, they can be held accountable for their actions, both by the law and by consumers

totally get it locustsloth. but when a government is corrupt how do you expect the corporations to handle themselves? I believe the result in corporate morale failures are in direct correlation to the governmental system being mostly whores to lobbyists and alike. Majority of them wanting only whats good for them and not the people and country they represent. I think this amount of misuse of our tax payer dollars and the amount of thievery that is taking place hidden in Union contracts and such is only the result of the governments lack of oversite of itself. The major problem with corruption of the public sector is that there are no real consequences... while in a normalized private sector where corruption is prevalent without government intervention(bailouts) there are "in practice" real repercussions, bankruptcy and litigation.
Dont get me wrong-there is a place for government system, but just not in the capacities I see being proposed and implemented. I am taking a liking to the Ron Paul position on most parts of his ideologies when it involves governmental policies-"no business being there in the first place".
To say we can abolish all corruption in private sector in a truly free society by having further regulation is a bit pollyannaish as well, to use your word. And to not hold these corruptions in the public sector equally or in higher accountability is detrimental to our future. I say where is their regulation? Where is our power to do something about it, when they redraw district lines to avoid their eventual demise. Cutting deals with corporate America (again only possible with government participation). Lying in bed with Union members. And most of all forcing their political agendas before upholding the constitution and laws of this country.
It is a sad state of affairs and not easy to fix, but damn all the public officials are getting off scott free while we all cry at the corporations for ruining our current way of life... is it not of the interest of corporations and their shareholders to make as much money as possible? Is that not what we ask from them to do? Now if they weren't able to get into the political and public sector and have the influence they currently have... wouldn't it be a bit better. And whose responsibility is that to make sure this happens? Not corporations, public officials have to be the ones above the bribery and greed for this to work.

you can't really play the chicken and egg game that we've just played here. Both business and government are culpable for their failures regarding monetary influence in government. There has to be an offer and an acceptance of said offer. Neither party can claim innocence.
And i agree that government officials need to be held accountable for soliciting/accepting these bribes in their various forms. i guess my way of thinking is that if we were able to start from scratch again,say clearing out all the politicians currently in office, and cleared out all regulation, the avarice of corporations and those who run them would then require regulation again.
As you said, corps are 'told', 'expected',(whatever) to make as much money as possible. And once all legal avenues are trodden, they will naturally seek to circumvent laws in the search of more profit.
