*sparks up an excrutiatingly satisfying imported Marlboro Red and draws deep*

    • Oops. That's old me.

Don't 'quit' - just stop smoking.
      Easier that way. Good luck!

Don't tell everyone. You put pressure on yourself that way. In fact if anyone asks if you've stopped say no you're just having a break, then they wont keep asking you HEY HOW'S IT GOING??? and it wont really fucking get you down to keep being reminded.

    • good advice!sureshot1/2
Quite right - ties in with what I meant above - don't make a big deal of it, sureshot, and your body won't either.Nairn2/2

I haven't had one since 12/31/07. I still get the urge. I'm afraid I'm going to have it forever.

I (and my gran, when she quit in her 40s) found it helpful to keep a box around. Just to know it's there.Nairn3/4

Keep a kilogram bag of raw mixed nuts by your desk.

Every time you fancy a tab, start munching your nuts.

I stopped a few weeks ago, for good.
I didn't specifically make note of the exact date, cause I didn't, (and no disrespect, Llyod), want to be one of those people that tell you "I havent smoked for 4 years, 2 months and 9 days", cause it makes you sound like you've 'given up' something, and really, you want to carry on doing it - like all bitter and slightly resenting yourself for not still having a fag now and again.
I just don't smoke, and I've not wanted one since I stopped - Im happy to say its out of my mind.

    Shit, good luck with it.

I just quit last year with the help of the almighty Chantix. Worked great for me. Was a pack a day or more for 11 years.

Be prepared to lose your mind for six weeks but after that you'll never have to smoke again. You can do it. Accept no substitutes. Gum, food, anything - they will prolong your agony. Change just one thing, just do not smoke.

Somehow I manage to smoke about once every few months. I will never start again...but every once in awhile they can be good.

I think for most people, they need to completely stop though.
