Is there a way to embed the html banner code generated from ad servers such as ValueClick into the .swf file?
- matt310
why would you want to do that?
- matt310
you need the html code to display the banner

Its in a flash site, but the banner ads are from a ad server. can i just install the code in the link?
- flashbender0
what do you mean by "install"?
- hiimerik0
oh boy.

install meaning copy and past tracking code. I admit "install" was the wrong word.

not really following what you want to do... but on our OpenX adserver when we upload a Flash banner with embedded links, it has an option to 'Convert Links' to allow our adserver to track clicks (it changes the link to an adserver internal link that then redirects to the original embedded link, or something like that...
When we run network ads, we just choose HTML banner, and paste the supplied code in...
This isn't helping at all is it...

well the best I can say is that anything you put in a href tag you can put in a getURL call in flash

usually if you have third-party tracking, the banner is also pulled from their server isnt it?
- me20
if the banner is pulled from a third party server, how do i embed that banner in a SWF file?
- matt310
why dont you just put it outside the flash movie - below or something.
- flashbender0
ah. I get your problem now.
you could set the link as a variable and read that in from an external file and have the getURL call the variable.

this is going to be the site (under construction)

When there click the first menu button "monday night conversation". You will notice on that page a banner ad at the bottom (3rd party ad server) If you also click the "Forest Whitaker" menu button you will see another banner ad which has to do the same thing.
Those examples have to be repeated throughout the site.

I believe you will need to collect the info for the banner ad from the third party server on page load then pass the appropriate info to the swf via flashvars (you would be dynamically writing the page) - then having something in the swf already to handle the vars to place the image and link data correctly
unless of course there is an api you can all to on the banner add server to get the data in XML form - then you can just parse that up directly in the swf....
- IamND0
looking at what you have - i'd prey for an api from the ad server - perhaps you could get a list all at once when you load the movie...
gotoandlearn - http://www.gotoandlearn.com/play… good example of calling the kuler api and working with the returned xml
otherwise maybe some sort of ajax style solution (js on the page that flash would call to go out and sim a page load gather the ad server response and send it back to the swf...)

unless your ad server can give you a link directly to the banner collateral, you will probably have to use externalinterface to call a js function that can scan through the ad's code. this, however, will load the collateral twice. maybe there's a hook in the ad servers' js that you can use..
blah - thinking as i type...
this, of course, is assuming that your ad server serves ads via js. if it actually spits out the banner code on the server side - you should be able to grab that code before it gets to the client and pass it in to flash via flashvars.
