Flash Portfolios 1111 Responses

I am interested in getting a job as a junior flash programmer and was wondering what I should be working on to build a portfolio that will land me a job. What types of things are companies looking for? What types of projects are they expecting to see? Since I am still learning flash, I don't have any flash work done for clients so would made up stuff work?

a site that shows what your skills are, a site that shows your previous work while still being subtle yet clean. go clean, go green.
don't be too flashy, ditch the gay intro.

sure, made up stuff will work. but be sure to include at least a couple pieces that are real world examples or similar to that so that employers can see how your skills can be applied to client work. but in general, i think self initiated work shows that you are motivated and if it is good enough, it could land you a job.

Personally if I was looking for a junior Flash developer I'd be looking for the awesome little experimental bits of coding because it shows they're a bit creative.
Nothing worse than a Flash developer who sits around talking about "maintainable code" (pfft if you want that crap go develop .net ASP whatever for the enterprise) and other crap instead of making things actually cool… you know the whole point of flash.

being creative is obviously important, but flash has evolved beyond eye candy. the work i'm getting now is more application like, which means, yes, you must be able to work in a team and write maintainable code! i would suggest a display of a solid foundation in programming in general, complex math and logic, oop principals, design patterns, knowledge of version control systems and alternate means of development like eclipse and flex.

massively complex multi-user enterprise level as3.0 RIAs, that never really take off or get seen by anyone.
AS3 is the new Java - overspecced, underused, massive barrier to entry.
