These two directions were chosen from the initial comps. They still haven't decided which direction to continue in though.

both are nice... the 2nd seems to have more immediate impact... the photography does it's job far more than the first. (this is a photo site of sorts after all)
- PonyBoy0
although... in the second... i really don't like that you've covered up a majority of the image w/ that black box and text...
... the impact of the image is weakened dramatically... that man's face has something to say... nahmean?
- JG_LB0
Maybe I'll make the black text box smaller so it allows the image to breathe more.

they're both the same direction!!!!!!
but definitely number 2 is more worked out.
GO WITH NUMBER 2!!!

i like the second one better --
i would maybe just try and tighten the space between everything e.g. logo and start of the image. and news events shop with nav...totally agree with the black box.. thing though

I like the second one way more. If you're going to go with the first one, though, I'd crop that image to put it back into the grid column.
- Hmm it is..?

- I'm doing it wrong?JG_LB
- Doing what wrong? lol I'm just offering my impressions and ideas – a critique.dog_opus
- Yeah it's cool, I appreciate it. I was just trying to clarify the "crop image to grid" comment.JG_LB
- Oh, yeah – I think it would look better if it was the same width as the column. I don't think assymetry works in this instance.dog_opus

Refined it a bit, any better?

2nd is better. The box problem highlighted by ponyboy is still there.
But mainly it lacks a bit of personality: that light gold logo is almost lost in the top and seems a bit thrown there. The headlines and general disposition of the content underneath the big image just say "boring blob to read". I can understand that the focus is photography but a bit more refinement on these aspects would shift the design from being good to being very good.

As already mentioned, the second is a better choice but the box is still a problem. Why does it need to be there? Half of it is empty anyways. Why not add a small navigation instead and leave the photo uncovered?

I immediately thought the second had a greater impact. Just think the composition is better, and the features are better defined.
Although I quite like the transparent box with the Photographers name (it seems to highlight the photo as a feature article well) I don't know how well it will work with other photos with differing compositions.
