When using one typeface in a layout, does using a condensed version of it along with regular, etc, "use too many fonts" as it was put to me today - or is it fair game?

all fair - just avoid the design police.

I think it is fine to use both as long as you have a plan. ie: condensed font is always used as titles and sub-headers, non-condensed font is always used as body copy.

Yeah setting copy in condensed can be killer on the ol' orbits. I like to set titles/headers/subheads with condensed. I like the texture using condensed fonts alongside regular creates, sometimes a bold weight feels too heavy or too wide to me.

nah, fair game. that's what you should be doing, use a font with a big family and just go at it. but be nice to the eyeballs.
