    5. Jasper Johns - False Start $17 million

Jasper Johns was the most expensive living artist at auction in 1988, when his White Flag painting sold for $7 million at Christies, then his False Start painting sold at Sotheby's the next night for $17 million. He held the title for quite some time.

Damien Hirst took the title in 2007 when his Lullaby Spring sold for about $19.2 million. The Hirst pill cabinet was bought by the royal family of Qatar, the Al-Thani family.

On some level, it's deeply funny that the most expensive piece of art is a painting of a morbidly obese naked woman.

Yea - the diamond skull didn't sell at auction so it doesn't count. Even though Hirst asked $100 million for it.

Ugh. Like a bad rendering, something you'd find at iStockPhoto

    http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0atKfs401abZo/610x.jpg

And 24 mil for THIS shit??? Looks like something that would be hanging from the ceiling at a Macy's valentine's day sale. ridiculous.

I kind of like the fat lady actually. I'm gonna buy it and hang it on our bedroom wall for my fiancee to look at, inspiring her to keep her body fit for at least the next two decades. 33.6 million is cheaper than adultery ...

    sometimes i wonder..
do they calculate inflation etc with that?

i mean, if you do, than you will find out the richest man on earth does not live in this day and age.

    • Good point - but I think that the prices are so much higher than what came before that these would still be at the topukit1/2
