What do you guys do to prevent getting burnt out.
You know those periods where you can't even bear to look at the monitor or pen any more and getting anything work related accomplished is like pulling teeth?

always but if you it didnt then you would be bored
- yeah that made senseJamalJenkins

Heh, I've gone through it before. Heavy workload, weeks on end without weekends etc. I usually find ways to break up my work time enough to keep my interest but sometimes man...

the thing is that when you finish that heavy load, the sensation of accomplishment is amazing. dont matter what kind of work you did or do

i heard going on holiday or having "a life" both prevent burnout. this is hearsay though. personally i do like lloyd does.

gung, where the fuck is the logic in that? how can you take a holiday or have "a life" if the workload is too large? thats the whole point of burnout - it's because you have no time to do those things.

This may sound corny, but getting out to the woods with my dogs every day is my primary defense against burn-out. It's a really fun interlude that I can look forward to each day, no matter what (unless the weather is dangerous – 2-3 times a years, usually). In addition to hanging out in a beautiful place, I'm able to feed off my dogs' ecstasy of simply running around having fun, I get some physical exercise, plus it gives my neo-cortex a much-needed break. (There are, of course, times when nothing can repel the repugnance toward work, but I always know it'll pass soon enough.)
I think you might just need something calming and refreshing each day to look forward to. (Something besides bonghits, or, heaven forbid, that salvia stuff.)
- I've been looking forward to camping or cottaging all summer. You have a good point about making it every day though.
scrap_paper - Even if it's just for half an hour or an hour. Definitely makes a difference for me.dog_opus

Like I said I try to intersperse work time with some physical activity and music, girlfriend time but sometimes there just isn't the time.
Funny that you mentioned the "end of the heavy work load" MrDinky. Normally I do feel great when a project is delivered to my satisfaction an I get a couple of pesos but lately I don't feel too satisfied. I think it may be a bit of freelancer syndrome too. Where is the next job coming form etc etc.
I guess I shouldn't complain too loud. Having a heavy workload while freelancing should be a good thing.
- Yeah, a lack of time is hard to work with. I imagine if it comes down to it, you'll make time somehow.dog_opus

try out a different medium, that also helps. its the repetition i suspect.

the fucking logic: burnout is a longterm thing, building up over years/ months. it´s not a single, heavy project that drains you for a few weeks, right? so a holiday now or then, going out every other day when the time allows would keep you sane i suppose. if working conditions don´t allow for these things at all over a long period of time, one has to quit if one can´t handle it. no other solution then.
- oh, youre talking about a long period of time. I ALWAYS LIVE IN THE MOMENT! :D********
- but yes i'm burnt out too in every possible way********

At least we have somewhat interesting jobs. Imagine if you were an accountant or something FFS

teaching burned me out.. so I went back to graphic design. which never gets old if you just listen to cool music at work.

burn out is less common in labor, or task-orientated where it's very clear what the purpose and result is.
I'm having a tough time at the moment. I feel defeated about everything I try or think of trying.
