Joomla vs. Drupal 55 Responses

So I am trying to decide whether to setup Joomla or Drupal as a CMS for this website that has been running for ten years without any cms system in place, in fact they use blogger for the blog. I know.
Anywho, does anyone like coding templates for these systems? Which would you think is the most straightforward templating system, I really am looking for a way to use a variety of templates built using css, xhtml and javascript which would change depending on category of the published materials.
If you got any advice that would be great!

Size / Scale of the site?
Both are pretty pretty heavy CMSes and in my experience tend to confuse the hell out of clients unless they've got a web-person on staff. If the site is smaller then there are also other options.
Filter "CMS" as there's lots of threads on the subject.

The site is quite large, www.hintmag.com. Currently static it requires writers to publish articles using FTP only, which makes management a real bitch and lets not even get started on updates sitewide...
I was thinking that I could help the dude out by creating a set of templates that would rotate depending on article category, as the sites layout is fairly minimalist it should be "easy" to create a variety of layouts with small object changes here and there.
I have started to mess with Joomla and so far I like the templateing system that I see...
I wonder how many people here would +1 drupal over joomla?
Thanks for the comments so far, its going to help a lot.
As of now the writers ftp articles that get published. It's a real mess. I just want to get a CMS running for the guy
