client says
"Hey, You guys gave us some screen grabs last year that were awesome. We are working on making a better presentation in our catalog. Do you have the higher-res images then the 72 DPI that we received last year."
Happy Monday.

Haha. Good luck explaining that one...
Stuff like that pisses me off too, but remember not everyone is as clever as you and I.

Keep fighting the good fight. I have a client and when I ask for logo files she goes to the website and just saves the GIF of it off the page, because she is too lazy to pick up the phone.
These marketing people aren't dumb their just ignorant because they CHOOSE not to educate themselves.

quick solution:
- turn on your Zoom In function in Universal Access in System Preference
- get your web site and Zoom In and capture piece by piece (it will capture in 72dpi but in zoom)
- piece it together. You should have able to get at least 144 dpi for decent color print.

i'd like to know how this 300dpi thing started, why everyone thinks this. i remember being told 300dpi in school and on the net when i was first getting into digital imaging, i had to figure out myself that it wasn't nessary then bring it up with a printer one time who confirmed my suspicions that it wasn't nessesary.

#1 question i get from friends in PR:
I just stole this shit off a website and need to send it into [insert huge fashion magazine here] by lunch. How do I make it hi-res?
That question is usually followed by "Can I do it in MS Paint?"
I'm not joking.

other silly solution...
find a good matte monitor, large enough capture the whole site. If the site is long, get a monitor that can support vertical placement so show the whole site.
get a high res camera, take a pictures.
i have done this and works ok. make sure you get a monitor that refreshes really fast so when you take a pic it wont capture the refresh..
and call it your "design solution, to view web its native setting that show case how the viewers would see it"

I love that request. High Res Screen Caps comin' right up, douche.
- MLP0
screen grabs are always why you should design hi-res so you can make mockups later. someone posted vector window borders awhile back. can't find the link though.
nothing makes me more mad than our web dudes asking for hi res files all the time, but when we need to go backward, ie take a shot for print from them, they say they never save or build from (bullshit, i give you hi-res files daily) quality files.

well actually... if you're printing screen shots you do need to up the resolution by resizing with nearest neighbor selected or they'll come out fuzzy low res instead of crisp low res, so it's not that crazy of a request.

i just had to design postcards to advertise short films that were shot in video, using video stills. I up-resed to triple the size and then added "film" noise to obscure the jags

Its not crazy of a request at all. Why would you make fun of them for not knowing the nuts and bolts of a industry they arent part of. Stuff like that can be explained, no need to make fun of the client. Bad attitude.

I have a vector mock-up of safari, if anybody wants it.

how big are they actually printing the screenshots? @50% they'll be 150ppi which is ok for desktop printing. from there you *may* be able to use a res-up pluggin to get something decent and close to 300dpi.
