I just got back into town and there is an envelope taped to my door with my landlord's name on it. I immediately opened it thinking it was FROM him with the utility bills from the last 2 months in it. As I read the note, it was actually intended for him and it was from his bank telling him that he hasn't paid the mortgage for 2 months and they were trying to reach him. I wasn't supposed to have read it so I don't know if I should call him today and just tell him there is a letter for him.
Q: has anyone ever had this happen to them? how much time did you have to move out?

this happened to a friend of mine, the whole building was evicted and I believe they had a month from notice.

You should have a contract with him, he'll probably have to give you 4 weeks notice if you do have a contract, likewise - you'd have to give him 4 weeks notice too. Thats the usual crack - in place to protect both renter and rentee. Dont know what the case would be though if the bank want to come grab the place off him though.

Yes - call him and let him know there's a letter from him. If he asks why it's opened, shrug and say stupidly 'i dunno' - it doesn't matter. It'll be interesting for you to see what he admits.

Also, starting making backup arrangements to move, just in case.

my friend has his house for rent and it is cheaper than where I am so it might work out to my benefit. I'll call him too.Tark2/2

seems like i should be able to get my deposit and last month's rent too but I'm worried already spent it. I will call him in a bit and tell him he has a letter and see what he says.

maybe you can work out a deal with the bank to take over the mortgage if it is going into foreclosure.

    • you mean pay the bank rent for the rest of the lease?Tark
