Have you saved the Project?

Not familiar with Express, but in Pro, in the "Sequence" menu there are submenus for "render all" "render selected", etc. In those menus, make sure most, if not all are checked

Have you saved, quit Final Cut and re-opened and tried it?

The clip you added my be using a different codec. It’s been a while for me and I was using FCP, but that rings a bell.

i'd try taking away the clip you dropped in right before the eirdness started and dropping another in in it's place and seeing if it renders. This way you can pin-point whether it's the new clip or the timeline or the program or whatever

I hope so. FCE is pretty vague on what it will and won’t allow you to do. I think it assumes that you are just dumping from your camcorder and editing. If you can handle the learning curve, Pro is teh balls.
