I just feel like the monkey as a pet is a bad idea, because in many cases, the monkey is smarter.

Are you seriously considering this? What the heck is wrong with you? Pure selfishness. If you want to do something good for an animal, adopt a shelter dog – the one species that evolved over thousands of years to actually live within the human social construct.
