is there any that is recommended versus others?

Never used a kit... always got the different supplies as needed. I think kits could be kind of limiting...

what basic supplies would you recommend to start with?

some of the kits can be pretty shitty, just call up a screen printer and ask them if you can buy some stuff like emulsion and stencil remover straight from them. Then when you go to get it you can ask them any questions that you have, they know their stuff.

so that speedball stuff ain't worth it?

just the basics for making screens and inks that you can mix. I would go with the one for 320.
You printing textile or waterbased?
Speed ball ones are crap and way overpriced

in my ignorance can anyone explain what makes one better than the other. regardless of price, i'm talking quality. I mean would do i have to look for to ensure they are quality supplies. isn't ink ink and a screen a screen?
- not really goes much deeper than that. different mesh counts, different emultions for diffrent inks.szymon_k
- the list goes on. check the forums here for help they pretty much cover everything for printing flat stock and some tshirt stuff

ghetto style it:
stretch some nylon panty-hoes across an old picture frame.
paper cut outs for stencils. (or just buy some emulsion)
nail some old weather striping to a board for a squeegy
oil-based house paint makes a pretty good 'ink' if plastisol is too expensive.
- no, if youre going to silkscreen might as well do it right.mtgentry

the speedball kits use the shittiest of wood for the frames. get them wet twice and they warp like crazy. I would def go with aluminum screen frames.
