Ink Density

I just submitted an ad to a magazine and got this response back from my rep...
"They need to lower the ink density on the page to as close to 300% as possible. I can let it go to the plant at a max of 310%.
At the moment there are parts of their creative that are set at 380% Ink Density.
They need to lower the CMYK values in order to correct this problem."
Never had this problem before...do I need to lower the CMYK values to make a more paler ad? Sorry if I seem clueless...first time I've ever had this problem. Is there an easy fix?

is it a pdf?

never heard of that one before.

seems they ask you to change the color! thats not good
- morilla0
couldn't the printers handle that on their end?

The working file is a PSD based file with text in Illy. The PDF sent to the magazine is a PDF/X1A. Never heard of it either...

I'm distilling the file with the printer's settings...seems like it'd be set up for the correct output.

Alot of pubs we deal with only take 300 total ink.. which sucks, but to much total ink just floods the page...
..the ghetto correction is go swich to RGB (only 300 possible total ink)
and then back to CMYK (which will then have only 300 total ink..)...or try doing it visually and running a proof
- but I would run a proof after if you use the ghetto version!nicnichols
- Might have to try this ghetto version! Thanks!CincodeMayo
- I might sound ghetto, but it saved my ass once!nicnichols
- dont listen to this, its wrong. There is no such thing as total ink when you are in RGB. WHen you convert back to CMYK It wont limit the ink to 300 unless you use a profile that is designed to do so.lumedia
- It's cool...I followed your method down below. Should be ok now. Thanks.CincodeMayo

c:100% - m:80% - y:100% - k:40% = 320%
Somebody will consider this density too much...
You can put your image in Acrobat and control what color to diminish...

That is a totally legit request from the printer. The easiest way to take care if it would be to open source image in Photoshop and convert it to a Custom CMYK and set the ink limit in the dialogue.
In inDesign or Illy just dont use any CMYK builds that exceed 300%.

yeah legit request and be thankful that your printer pulled your artwork... your images would have most likely come back off the press looking like crap.
