are you looking to rent or buying?
Obviously buying is more expensive depending on what equipment brand you choose.
But for renting in NY I use this place and it works out quite well.

What sort of Cam set up are you looking for, and how big of a studio?
Are we talking Auto photography or table top or models here?....you've got rent, insurance, cameras, lenses, computers, printers, lights, stands, tables, booms... do you have an idea of what you'd like the studio to be?

It really depends what your goal is, the type of equipment you buy, etc. It can be something you build over time or put a lot into. If you are at the stage where you need lighting, etc. I would suggest leasing from profoto. Many companies will lease equipment but you have to have a business account and show at least 2 years in business. If you have $20k to throw at it you can't go wrong with buying profoto lighting but this is just the tip of the iceberg of needed equipment for a studio. There is also insurance and general operating costs to consider.

We have 2 set ups here, one for large stuff (auto) and one for table top.. both sets use Phase One backs on Hassy's, and export thru Phase one onto big G5's.. the table top has 4 Normans in soft boxes, diff size depending on what we're shooting.. the large set uses ARRI hot lights, and some big 10k's which requite some really big 220 cords.. we bounce that off of a hung flat (like 15x20) for Auto stuff.. we've got a Canon SLR set up for some stuff as well...

For a smaller, and easier budget, I would recommend a Nikon D700 (or D300) and a good set of Alien Bees lights, A quick laptop and a good printer.. thats a nice basic setup that you can always grow with...

I highly recommend you rent before you buy if you don't know anything.
