sell him a new logo, or deal with it.

make it clear you did not design the logo (in your folio), but take the money and run.

use it. But make reverse it out of a solid colour that is very light.

Come up with a couple of sketched ideas (unfinished though - don't give them too much for free!), particularly suited to the design you've been asked to do for them. When you show them your comps, show them the two, side by side.

    • ..er.. and suggest you could finish off your ideas for a small fee.detritus1/2
This small fee will turn into a bigger fee, when it comes to updating all the rest of their materials.detritus2/2

I'd love to peer back through the mists of time and have a peek into the mind of whoever it was that came up with that logo, try and ply apart their reasoning. Makes sense no little it not does n't.

Design the entire site and reserve a place for the logo. Then when you are near completion drop the logo in, and save it.

Seriously, I had to do this a few times and I could not get past the logo, so I left it out until the end. Worked for me.

honestly, that is bad...but there are much worse logos out there. I had one client rip the recycle symbol and put his name right in the middle of it and call it "his" logo.

That's not a great logo but surely it's still workable in a design. I've certainly seen much much worse.

I've been there. Same situation as your's, and it was the worst assignment I ever took on.

    You have a few options:

    1. Settle with the fact that the client has only bad taste, and make him a very quickly done site to go with his shit logo. Take money. Run.

    2. Convince the client that his logo sucks, in a polite manner, and make him pay you to do another one to go with his new killer web site. Take money. Update portfolio.

    3. Tell him to shove his money. What he wants is a prostitute, not a designer. Collect coupons. Wait in line.

I agree with you on your first point doctor. I used to try and sell clients all the time on new logos, but they wanted nothing to do with it. Most of the time, it was the client who designed the logo, and well, even if it is a crap logo, it's better not to insult the client.

So just take the money and run. Not every project you do is going to end up in your portfolio, so just suck it up and deal.

I've run into this before; you'll more than likely have to make due, as clients are often reluctant to undergo a logo redesign. Explain to them that there will be a visual disconnect between the look and feel of the site and logo. In order to communicate their business effectively all pieces need to work together and that they should at least consider a redesign while in this process.

If your client wants a shit logo, then you are not properly doing your job. We all have had to do work we don't like; but it is your responsibility to give him amazing in simple terms. If you did it right, and it spoke to him, you can convince otherwise.

    • You always: Give them what they want, what you think they want, and what you want.jteore
