Vector Halftones

So, what's the best, most fluid way of creating halftone patterns within Illustrator specifically on the PC?
[ so no Vectoraster.. http://www.lostminds.com/content… , sadly ]I'm reduced to using rasterbator to generate clean-looking halftones, but this requires quite a lot of cleaning work after using the already non-native to Illustrator application, which is a pain the arse where 'workflow' is concerned.
[ http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator… ]However, it is still better than doing it within Illustrator, using the technique of rasterizing a gradient, half-tone filtering, then LiveTracing, which leads to messy and, frankly, crap results.
I'm having problems getting Scriptographer working (I appear to be getting quite stupid in my old age), so that's out
[ http://www.scriptographer.com/Sc… ]So how do the pros do it? Surely there's an easier way? I mean, this is quite basic stuff - why's Illy so crap here?
(and yes, I've filtered - some of the above is from previous threads - just looking for alternative ideas and methodologies.)

I'd like to know this too. That scriptographer looks cool.

very cool, thanks

Q: "Anyone know of a flexible halftone generator that integrates nicely with Illustrator?"
A: Photoshop
- he wants it vector.Antonelli
- what about a bit map, save as gray sacle then you can save it as a tif and you can drop any color you want on it.
rodzilla - vectorizing halftone patterns is ridiculous. keep it raster and place/color into your illustration.horton
- Ridiculous it may be, but need it thus I do.detritus

scriptographer isn't hard once you get it. and i get it.
it's really simple actually.
send me a bitmap and i'll do it for you, trite!

tritus has the male.

rip nairn.
he was a jolly good fella.

I can get 50% of Scriptographer scripts to work 50% of the time.

I just can't get sodding Scriptographer to work. I used to dabble with it on my old CS2 install, but now? Pah.
Horton - in this instance, I need straight-to-vector output, besides even if not - then why not? It's not like it should really be that complicated.
Janne - your email link only contains Photoshop applications, brushes and stock art?

The thing with the Scriptographer vectorizing tool is that it is really hard to get. It took me two or three years to understand, but here's the basics...
The image that you would like to rasterize, make sure the widest/tallest length is 100px. If it's any larger, it will basically cripple your machine while doing its calculations.
Then, place your image into a new document and make sure that you embed the image.
Create the vector shape you wish to use (circle, square, etc) and then select both. Push play.
That should get it to work. Good luck...

Are you also asking the question on LinkedIn or is the question on my profile a coincedence?

There's a scriptographer demo vid here: http://www.scriptographer.com/Ga…

Also - http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator… might work for you too
- Aye, that's what I mentioned I'm currently using, thanks! :)detritus

What I mean is, Scriptographer simply doesn't work on my machine. It used to - but no longer. I don't know if I've fiddled with the Java Virtual machine, or what, but the blighter plumb refuses to work.
- It is quite buggy, I have to keep taking it out of my plugins after I use it otherwise the fucker plays havoc with illy.ian

Rasterbator's great, but it's essentially a hack. I'm having to inflate the input image size, then output to A3 over one sheet, then spend ages cutting out all the non-filled points it puts in, merge the remainder, etc etc.
The sizing's a bit guess-filled, the ultimate output fiddly.. I mean, it's what I'm using and it'll do - it's just not the best, most efficient, solution I can imagine.

yes! this one is great:
- er.. I mentioned that up there too. It's Mac-only.detritus
- ;)detritus
- you can export as PDF or EPSdoesnotexist
- Aye, but I don't have a mac.detritus
- get a mac?doesnotexist
- That would, at first glance, appear to be a less than useful suggestion at this stage. :)detritus
