Don't do anything for free, even if your current employer recommended you for the job. Who is he to determine what jobs you accept/decline. No way. If they want to keep costs down they can take the photos themselves. Your business (even if it's freelancing on the side) is still a business and should be run as such.
I'll use the same example we've all heard 10,000 times before.....would you expect a doctor, contractor, plumber, mechanic, electrician or anyone else to work for free? No way in hell... of course they wouldn't, and neither should you. It insults all of us when employers/clients think what we do is worthless and can be had for free. When we give it to them for free, it only reinforces that thought in their minds. You get what you pay for...if you're paying nothing, you're getting nothing.
Give them your price and if they don't want to pay, fuck em.
Good luck...

Keep it pro, that means no excuses nor lies. Tell them how much you'd charge for such project and if it's to high for them tell them they're free to look somewhere else. That way you won't burn any bridges but won't get ripped either.
- Then unload your 9mm into them and say "Keep the change." I realize that makes no sense but it will rock.harlequino

See that Steve? Thats what you are man. A Mercenary. A fucking, stick it to the man, balls to the wall, hard as fuck mercenary. Just like Steven Segal. You think if Steven Segal was asked to take photos of his former employers conferences for free he'd do it? Like fuck he would, unless he had to fucking kill someone and he was using the conference as a cover.
Now think about that when you're talking to your boss. Take no guff from these swine!
- Gucci0
Free work? unacceptable ... unless they're paying for your whole family to go there for 2 weeks.
- JamesBoynton0
Fuck them! Freebie and it involves a shit load of travel time. No fucking way, make up an excuse to keep him onside though!
- Stylus0
"I'm sorry boss I've already volunteered to give your missis a decent shag that weekend"
- harlequino0
"I'm sorry I can't do photography, as I'm having my balls operated on the same days as the conference. You see, I am having them removed, as they were going to be your Xmas present this year. I figured you already thought that, for some hidden reason, you own them. So, I thought it'd be nice to present them to you formally."
Try that.

If you think your current employer volunteered you, you may want to talk to him first before you decline. He/she may think your their pawn to be allocated wherever they see fit. If they told your former employer you'd do it, and you don't, it'll reflect badly on them and might negatively impact you.
Not that they should be volunteering you without asking
- I'm speaking with him tomorrow. As long as he doesn't mind me not doing it, I will politely decline. Otherwise I'm fucked...Raniator
- How are you fucked? You can't say no if your current place volunteers you without pay?NONEIS
- Fucked because I'll have to to it. For free. When I don't want to do it.Raniator
- gudphilip0
tell them to use their phones to photograph the event
- harlequino0
"We want to keep costs down..."
"Might I reccomend eliminating the flying in of a photographer from the budget?"
- Well yeah, I thought that. There must be more to this than just money. I think it's a back scratching exercise.Raniator
- With me playing piggy-in-the-middle.Raniator
- then ask for a reach around!harlequino
- Haha.Raniator
- i_monk0
Money or nothin', your shit ain't free.
- Raniator0
I think the chief executive of my current company had kind of volunteered me, without consulting me first.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to sound ungrateful but I left that company 'cause it was, and presumably still is, shit. Why should I keep helping them out, fuck them...
- Why do shit for free is right. That is fucking retarded. unless that conference is in hawaii screw em.Iggyboo
- harlequino0
Why do we all keep doing shit for free?
Grease up that winker. It's gonna hurt.
- gudphilip0
tell them to find a new photographer then.
- Raniator0
They won't be paying me, that isn't how it would work at all. The conversation I had went along the lines of "We are trying to keep costs down"... blah blah.
One conference is in Belfast, the other Oxford so they will pay for the flight and accommodation for both. That's it.

The best things in life are free
But you can keep them for the birds and bees

That's what I want
