34/864 survivors as of posting. The ferry went out, thinking the typhoon was not going make a direct jab at them and left port at Signal Number 1 (Cat 1-2, in that case it's the Captain's decision whether to leave port.) As a Filipino, I'm saddened and disappointed at this. Saddened because of all those families who have held up hope that their loved ones and lost them (One woman in the ship sent a text message saying that it was all over and there was no hope and people were panicking), disappointed because this company has a spotty record and was still allowed to leave port whilst a storm was approaching.
I don't know. Probably fate just struck them. May the dead rest in peace, and if anyone is still alive in there, I pray for the best.

i'm not really sure what to say when things like this happen. it's a little surreal.

the modern titanic,
If only there was some occidental tourists stuck in there, you would have heard about the million dollar rescue plan. FEMA would send life jacket filled with depleted uranium, and a plan to bomb the country (cough... Iran) responsible for it would be under way.
but sadly they are just poor third world country peeps, you can replace them.
Right?"May the dead rest in peace, and if anyone is still alive in there, I pray for the best."
Amen- Sad truth.
Apparently they had lifejackets, but they were hesitant to jump in because of the seas and the suddenness of it all.omgitsacamera - ...suddenness of it all.omgitsacamera

very sad...
Why in the world would the captain of any ship be in the open sea during a typhoon, and why would anyone get on board in the first place?
- because making mistakes is what makes us human.********
- I saw that the president was really pissed on the phone with the Coast Guard about it leaving.omgitsacamera

when i was at high school we were on a geography trip to germany and france. while on a ferry in calais waiting to travel back to dover, a voice came over the tannoy announcing that it was too windy and the seas too rough to cross the channel ....
... after a few minutes the voice came over the tannoy again announcing "The captain says we are going to go for it!"
no joke!
and this was only a couple of years after the Townsend Torosen ferry disaster on the english channel.
you can bet that everyones asses on the boat was twitchin!

That's a pretty spurious and stupid reaction, 000000 (though, fairly typical of the over-emotional, ill-thought anti-Western sentiment that appear to flow from Italians on this blog).
Look at the West's recent help in China and Burma (although spurned in the latter), look at all the other shit 'the West' does across the world. How exactly should we help in an instance like this? It's not exactly as if help in the form of ships, helicopters and submarines can just sublimate there instantly from the opposing hemisphere, and it's not as if there aren't plenty of existing resources amongst the neighbours of the Phiillipones.
So, what exactly was your point? Do you really hate yourself that much?

4 Europeans taken hostage is more popular than this on CNN.

Truly sad. You just never know how long you have to live. In a strange way, I think tragedy can bring those not involved clarity, and a healthy sense of mortality. I know it does for me.
- omgitsacamera0
I literally started breaking down when they showed footage of 2 bodies that managed to float to the surface.

absolutely horrible.
i felt so bad when i read this in the morning. painful. best wishes to those affected from the situation.

It's scary how fragile life can be. Makes me paranoid.

70 Confirmed Dead.
48 Rescued.
746 Missing.I agree with designbot and funkage. Tragedies like these do give you a wake up call on life and how it could change in an instant.

yeah I'm Italian,
I like fast cars, boobylicious girls, wine and I'm so ANTI WESTERN that you better not eat Mac Donalds in front of me,detritus & moth are the new counter culture folks here,
assuming that I'm Italian because I live here is just plain stupid, I guess in your field of design you don't get to travel much....I find it appalling that everytime I speak my mind, "because I'm so anti -western" that i can't apparently use free speech, i get you guys jumping in.
to clarify the situation, i was born in a "third" world country, most of my family still lives there, what I hear from them is a lot different from what the news cover, if they even cover it...
the death and poverty that has impoverished my country is mainly due to western corporation that are happy to get the natural resources and keep dictators in power.and the sad thing is you never hear about the tragedy that happened there unless a foreigner is involved in it. its like the life of those living there has no signification, nobody's going to cry for them, right???
yesterday, the news here was that an italian died in Irak (8am)
at 1pm it was reported that it was an iraki with the Italian citizenship, it didn't even make the night news.....so whats your point then, am I wrong to think that way? did they even mention Irak anymore in the news where you live?
- "Yeah I'm Italian"
"assuming that I'm Italian because I live here is just plain stupid" er..?detritus - I didn't assume nothing, I'm just familiar with all the other stupid points you've made under different usernames.detritus
- Fair point about 'our' corporations though. Mind you, you might start by blaming your dictator, eh?detritus
- FIRST OFF: You can speak your opinion (but that means others can too!)dan5382
- SECOND: Should we revert back to tribes? I dont know what country exactly your talking about but they didn't say NO to the money they recieved.dan5382

that's a lot of ferries

You're so full of shit 000000.
I guess paranoia is a perquisite for a conspiracy theorist, because I neither made, nor expressed any assumption about which country you hail from - and furthermore - I don't fucking care.
- ********0
And you spelt Iraq wrong.
And you didn't mention people dying in Afghanistan in your necessary covering-of-all bases in what's wrong with the West. I guess you just don't care about Afghanistan. I find that appalling. Everytime you post - you never mention people dying in Afghanistan. Do you not have news where you come from? Oh you poor child! Maybe you can't read? The shame.
