Hi there,
I'm a senior designer looking to make the jump from full-time to freelance. I was just wondering if I could get anyone's perspective on the market at the moment? Is this a bad time to be doing it? Economy crunch is coming on, and the summer is our industry's slow down period. Am I committing financial suicide by trying it now?
Was just hoping any freelancers out there might be able to give me some perspective of the industry... how tricky/easy it has been for them recently...
cheers in advance!

london is full of designers, competition is big, imo, but if you are good, you can make some money

What Dig said.
I always look in the back of DW to gage how the industry is feeling, the more jobs there are the more work is out there. Currently the jobs are thin on the ground so I imagine it is going to be tight. A primitive source but relatively affective.
Bruised_blood you work is good and I doubt you will have any problems getting work. It is easier to get work if you outside of London IMO.
A mate of mine has just left Fingal as it happens and he is certainly getting work in.

"Economy crunch is coming on" - Certainly a consideration, I know an agency I do some work for are really struggling due to the looming recession in the UK... their clients are mostly in the construction industry and the work is really drying up! I guess the biggest problem is, in times of financial hard-ship, the first thing to get cut out of the budget is marketing... my brother works in marketing, and his hands are tied having to produce results on a budget of nothing! (I guess we all know how that feels in design though eh! lol)
But there is work around, and if you've got the portfolio, and the ruthless self promotional skills to get the work, then you can make it! :)
Freelance beats the hell out of agency work anyway! ...Unless you're one of the lucky few that work for a cool/creative agency.
Good luck whatever you decide! :)
