And it's only 26 years since it was released. Topical.
- I presume you're talking about the Carpenter remake and not the 1951 original?JerseyRaindog

- Well technically the original is called 'The Thing From Another World'shitehawke

The book "Who Goes There" (basis for "The Thing") was just reissued this year. Also available as an audio book download.
Recommended.

i have yet to see it all the way through.
it used to come on all the time on comcast. of course, since i've been looking to catch it i haven't seen it on once.

Do you know what the most disturbing thing about that filme is? Its the commentary on the special effects when the lead model maker is talking about having to buy barrels of ky jelly for the effects and he starts saying 'so we basically had gallons of ky jelly and its an all male production crew, filming in British Columbia, the weather was terrible and we were cut off for a long time'

- This is actually on the 'making of' documentary. Its so good, I was laughing my arse off.shitehawke

A long time favorite of mine. A perfect example of where traditional prosthetics and make up effects can evoke way more of a visceral connection with the viewer than todays state of the art CGI.

Most cgi-based filme leave me feeling like I may as well be playing a computer game cos at least then I might care what happened to the characters.

I thought this thread would be about k0nas peembo yo!

See theres the thing Drago, cgi may well be cheaper than actually blowing stuff up but as most people learn when they're kids, blowing stuff up is actually really fun.

great excuse to repost this gem.

analog is real.
there are certain things you can't emulate in cgi. the heat or smell of fire. it adds an element of tension and danger (even if it is in a controlled environment) that aren't present in computer effects. lighting is also incredibly difficult to mimic. computers and the programmers who write the algorithms have one hell of a time trying to effectively emulate real world light sources. and then of course, there is the element of a tangible cue. are the actors responding to and reacting to a real object with weight and volume or a ball on a stick that is going to be edited out in post?
of course a decent actor should be able to rise above these limitations, but it's still noticeable, and even some of the best cgi stands out like megan fox's clubbed thumb.

great movie ...
I fear that there's a remake in the works and it will most likely be produced by Michael Bay :(

part of what made it so good was the soundtrack it really sets the atmosphere.

love it.
this is pretty cool:
We visited the site in the summer of 2003, 21 years after the filming, and found remains of the camp still there as well as wreckage of the Norwegian helicopter.

yeah. holds up really well. like Alien, or Terminator.
the other day i saw part of David Lynch's Dune and thought that held up pretty well....the visuals, for being pre-CGI, are good.
- +1 Dune had a few really good moments for an otherwise flawed film.exador1
- the image of paul's little sister at the end amongst the ruins holding the knife in her hands...classic.exador1
