Taking a weekend trip with my girlfriend in a month or so...Hoping to be within 4-5 hours driving of LA or a few hours flight...

We go camping up toward mt san jacinto all the time, near a little town called idyllwild. not sure how badly damaged it is up there from the fires lately tho.
Joshua tree is cool, though at that time of year prob too hot, same for palm springs, anzo borego or any of the desert areas.
I suggest just going up the coast, stop in santa barbara, morrow bay, hurst castle then cut over to paso robles for wineries and such (its where the movie sideways was based). Or down to mexico south of ensenada and camp/surf.
you could pretty much point your car in any direction and find something interesting.
