  will be in town on pleasure... only staying 2 nights then heading up the coast (obviously i'll need a car for that) - was just wondering if i should go ahead and get a car when i get there or put it off until leaving SD.

  if you are staying down there, then you might not need to rent a car unless you plan on venturing out of the city , ie ( mission, PB, Encinitas, beaches....)
