saw a copy of the mag today.

im skeptical on most of the 10 'heresies'.
what do you think?

i didn't read all of that page, but i'm pretty sick of hearing about global warming & being green. it's in your face all the time, everywhere you go. every radio & tv commerical is about how a company is "doing it's part" to be green - even the oil companies.
fuck, the earth doesn't give a shit if we treat it well or not - it's completely mindless and indifferent. the earth isn't going to be forever suitable for humankind to live in - it wasn't for millions of years. it'll keep spinning and heating and cooling long after we're gone. i classify myself as a liberal, but really... these "green" warriors are annoying as hell. it's not our job to save the world.
- wow, didn't know we had an all knowing demi-god on qbn!avolve
- did i say something the average person wouldn't know? was the earth especially made for us???Antonelli
- that rant was especially George Carlin-esque... and to an extent, I agreePoint5
- there are other sentient beings that should have a chance to enjoy this kick-ass planet too. even despite the significancejaylarson

one i was skeptical about was about China and how it's a leader of alternative energy.
it might be a big producer of them, but where are the things being researched and designed at?
- coal is alternative to solar is alternative to hydro-electric is alternative to nuclear is alternative to oil etc...Point5
- meaning "alternative" is such a buzzword in this case.Point5
- true.omgitsacamera
- urine-powered cars would be alternative. or hobo-powered (ie: mulched up not pushed).airey

Antonelli makes an interesting point. Even if humans as a species live long enough, eventually, something will happen to this planet in terms of another global ice age or possible a volcanic eruption kicking up enough particulate matter to cause atmospheric change. Unless we learn to terraform a planet's environment, it won't make much difference what we do in the short-term.
Think about it in these terms. When the dinosaurs became extinct, a huge percentage of all living things on this planet died off. But the planet reach a state of equilibrium. So, even if people do create an environment that is inhospitable to most forms of life, it's just temporary and maybe for the better since as a species, humans consume far too much for this planet to sustain us.

so the point is live in excess as we do without innovation or efficiency then roll over and die ....the human way
- well, i don't live that way, but it does seem to be the American way.nearestexit
- Nice outlook on life.hedge
- we live in a very consumerist-driven society. buy more. even if you don't need to.nearestexit
- not really just the American way, there are a lot of other countries that do the same. It's animal behavior.Point5

that said, i think some of the points wired makes miss the bigger picture. nuclear energy is a great source of energy that doesn't contribute to global warming. and i'm sure everyone in nevada loves having nuclear waste in their state.
if there was a better alternative to storing spent nuclear fuel, i'm sure everyone would love this stuff. that and the fact nobody wants another 3-mile island or chernobyl.
- Shoot it into space.hedge
- Send it to China. One thing we can export. The locals won't notice with all the air pollution there anyways.omgitsacamera
- Hedge, I think they've looked into it. Currently, it's too risky (since rockets still tend to explode...nearestexit
- on launch. But that might be the answer one day.nearestexit

oozie, i'm not saying live in excess. i recognize the need to be responsible, at least making our time here a little more livable and enjoyable. we have the ingenuity to fix some of these problems, but it's all short-term, and nothing will fix the fact that the earth will heat and cool all by itself, eventually making it unlivable for us. We don't quite have the technology to control the natural world, so until we do, I think it's wrong to think that we can save it.
- i always have a "big picture" view on everything. so basically, we're all going to die anyway :)Antonelli

Kinda getting off subject, but read Julie Lasky's commencement address she gave at Cranbrook Academy of Art last month:

One interesting blurb:
"Nike's "Just do it" may have been good for our sense of empowerment, but it's been terrible for the earth. We're suffering from a glut of products, many tossed onto the market with a breezy heedlessness that probably has been mistaken for courage. You can imagine how a manufacturer, even after hiring consultants, doing research, and convening focus groups that challenged an idea for new product, said, "Aw, fuck it." Which is another way of saying "Just do it." How else can we explain a Procter & Gamble room deodorizer called ScentStories that "plays" like a compact disk, rotating in a heating device that releases a different smell every 15 minutes."

Don't bother with ooze. He's a slippery little troll.

Of course the Bush Administration is now caught up in yet one more political sham, applying political GOP pressure to skew the facts about Global Warming. It never ends....
NASA's press office "marginalized or mischaracterized" studies on global warming between 2004 and 2006, the agency's own internal watchdog concluded.
In a report released Monday, NASA's inspector general office called it "inappropriate political interference" by political appointees in the press office. It said that the agency's top management wasn't part of the censorship, nor were career officials.

i just consider the fact that the first hybrids were made a hundred years ago and yet all of a sudden they're a god send and innovative. then here in wired they're bad because of shitty ancient battery technology and because there's already a huge glut of non hybrids all over the place. you know if we were in cuba keeping the same cars we had since the 50s and just maintaining them ourselves with our own craftsmenship and care instead of buying the next gas guzzler that came around next year we'd be in a better situation still...but what about maintainance AND hybrids? you know there's so many better options out there yet non of them are actually on our plate anymore it's all too late we got to except our fait. that's only one example of a number of factors contributing to MAN MADE global destruction. fuck global wamring the deniers will just go about the dinasaurs lets talk technology.
- dskz0
yeah technology is whats gonna save our ass as always. Lets talk technology.
- dskz0
what the hell happened to solar power? And why dont we have more wind-powered energy plants? Especially in Chicago!
- dskz0
Ive never been to Chicago but it is the "windy" city....
(dumb, I know)
- dskz0
Global Warming is something that has already started (if its starting at all) and I doubt we can do much going ahead to change 200 years of industrialization. But if we invest in cleaner energy that can take care of emissions. So we need to think about new technologies. I really am buying that whole mindstate.
- oozie0
as soon as you say "global warming" some hedge like fucker says "dinosaurs are extinct"
