this maybe a really basic question but
What's the benefits?

depends what you want to do, if you are running a servfer of any type you need a constant IP, unless you use a dns service.
- nocomply0
allows you to act as your own web host I believe

Ok thanks.
It's just a braodband package are offering a static IP address (one) I did not know why it would benefit me...I do not intend to host sites.
- mrdobolina0
dancer, I don't think you will need it. Another reason would be if you were going to vpn into the office.
- you don't always need static, but it adds another layer of security.mrdobolina

it also lets you do remote desktop stuff more easily
- Dancer0
So a static IP is more secure?
- acescence0
if you're connecting to something like vpn from a static ip, it can be more secure as you can allow only connections from that specific ip.
- exactly, although you can do that by mac address too. but if you do mac address and IP it is more hardcore than the pentagon.mrdobolina
- pentagon.mrdobolina

On the other hand, your IP address will always be the same and anyone that really hates you and wants to h4xx0r your a$$ will have a much easier time...
- mrdobolina0
sounds like you don't need it, sir.

So In reality I should not see this as a major selling point. Good to know.
I wonder if they will let me get the package without the static IP...?
Can one switch between the 2?
- sure you can always add a static IP, it is a pretty common service upgrade.mrdobolina

You don't need a static IP for opening ports.
- oozie0
i beleive it's an important part of port forwarding...but i could be wrong. i set one up because otherwise i had to keep changing the ip in my torrent program, it says so in lots of help sites too
- You don't need a static IP for port forwarding at all and you don't need to enter your IP address to use torrent apps.kalkal
- acescence0
i think you're confusing your inside IP with your external public IP

"very important to set up a static ip..."
- mrdobolina0
yeah oozie, get rid of the upcharge, unless you are running a game server, in which case you may need static.
- i did for azereus otherwise i get a 'NAT problem' and slow speeds... that's how i learned about itoozie
- stop stealing music!!!!!!!mrdobolina
- ...and movies and software and pornoozie
- hahaha, I should set you up with something.mrdobolina
- like ... what exactly?oozie
- not ready yet, but... I will let you know.mrdobolina

In a past life I worked for a huge telephone company's internet divfision. :) Now the only networking I get is in my crib.

Well, I first opted for a dynamic IP, changed my mind and went with static instead. If your connection drops, it reconnects faster because the dhcp server doesn't need to release a new IP for you.
Switching over only took 10 mins on the phone too. They just talk you what to do over the phone. I hope you're good with strong Polish accents though ;)
