I Need a Bike

I know very little about what to look for when buying one. I need one that's good for riding in the city...to work/school and around my neighborhood. I'm a student so I'm on a budget. I can't really splurge on anything fancy, but I want something that can take the wear and tear of daily riding.
Any suggestions?

If you don't do a lot of riding already you'll probably find the ergonomics of a road bike a little harsh.
I would recommend looking for a decent hybrid for city commuting. They're not the sexiest out there but they work well for the stuff you're talking about. The advantage is they are usually pretty cheap since they're not typically prized by enthusiasts.
