I think Flash is an amazing program. Its scalability and effectiveness with vector media is most impressive. That said, why does it have so many little issues?

Just now I place my text exactly where I think it must go and yet when I publish, it moves the text ever so slightly to ruin my composition....

    Its a designers nightmare.

Nevermind, I fixed it. Seems like its all about the decimal points. You cant leave your text in positions that have weird decimal points.

So much time and effort is put into making a nice Flash site, the problem is that clients don't appreciate the effort and they are not willing to pay for it. Flash is wonderful... it is just a pain in the ass to make it look sweet.

And Adobe (Macromedia) is after all these years still unable to make flawless software...

The software is buggy, and you need a good few years of knowing all the workarounds to get anywhere... and that is often the difficult part when explaining to a client why something does actually take a while

Text fields are the most buggy thing in flash until version 8 (need to check how reliable they are on CS3)

Why do I have to hit faux bold in Flash to get a bold version of a font? Why couldn't you have made a snap to pixels button instead of having to go through the dropdown everytime.? Why do I have to hit allow smoothing to make a bitmap look good, can't you just look good all of the time? Why is animating in Flash different than in After Effects, why aren't they the same by now? How come importing a PSD into Flash never turns out the way you really want it, is this really a feature?

    • I think you need to realize that its not After Effects and it never will be.

    • They are completely different architectures.
      ********
    • But maybe they will pull it off and I ill eat my words.
      ********
    • also smoothing should not be turned on by default because sometimes it blurs the image too much. Hope that helps.
      ********
    • Flash and AE are different but that doesn't mean that the way you animate things have to be diff.fyoucher1
    • In regards to smoothing, it should do that for you, meaning it should determine that for u.fyoucher1
    • use as to gen text - its much nicerIamND

I thought it was harder to make an html site look the way you want it?

^the good Dr speaks the truth...

... Flash requires a couple of tweaks here and there - off-setting pixels here and there etc...

... but it's a hell of a lot easier and less time-consuming than beating out some css that looks different across browsers... get it right once... done. ;)

I can imagine CSS is harder, I really dont know where to even begin with CSS.

    • I'd say CSS is easier to document and more friendly to the end-user. Takes a little effort to learn of course, but no biggie for most ppl.doctor

I think more or less that both Dreamweaver and Flash need complete overhauls.

Flash is turning into a true dev tool, which while great for true-developers, it's making it really hard for the "devsigner" to get anything done - especially with the learning curve of AS3.

I think what Adobe really needs to do is focus on AIR / FLEX apps for the developer by really flushing them out as a viable toolset, while gearing Flash to the designer / animator crowd; keeping the code associated with it as simple as possible, because to be honest, what designer really gives a shit about the 10x more powerful runtime that AS3 offers over AS2? Shit, what designer is going to be able to even achieve that? Only a star in heaven I tell you...

Well since we are on the subject of complaints , I was just reminded what a large piece of manure Flash's vector tools are. Cant they just use the Illustrator engine on that?

You make a square with an outline, change your mind, proceed to delete the square...

And the outline is still there.

    Not good.

    • and im using the parent selection tool, not the child selector

I really really hate the type setting in Flash. The whole thing is such garbage. I wish they would at the VERY least start grouping typefaces in families. When I get my new rig up and running I'm going to pay a lot of attention on setting up my font management program right so that I can turn sets on and off to clear up that stupid 15 ft long typeface list that flash spits at you.

Other than that I'm loving AS3 and I think people are going to need to start learning code. The company I work for sent out a site to be designed by another flash guy and the thing came back completely timelined. To add a portfolio piece took a solid hour, to add one article to the news section, 45 minutes ... with two days of retrofitting I got it all to work dynamically = 2 minutes to add a portfolio piece, 5 minutes to add an article.

At this stage of the game people really need to start learning the AS. It's a bitch and a half to get over the hump but once you do you'll be a much happier person I swear it.

    • why don't people just make better, more customizable components for us non scripters?
      ********
    • There are lots of open-source Classes that can help non-scripters develop robust flash projects.tommyo
    • You still need a solid understanding of AS though. Personally I like programming with AS. It's PURE problem solving.tommyo

Me designer. Me no wanna learn more script.

Me thinks me hire script person to help.

Me also thinks script person will try to take my job and you end up with bad design.

Then we back to square one.

    • unless the script person is also a designer. evolve or die.acescence
    • yeah i heard that one before, guy sucked at design

      ********
    • do you mean writing code or just implementing code?
      ********
    • being able to design and code your designs is very useful

    • oh just implementing? I know how to do that...

i used to develop many flash sites, but come to find it as a horrible tool to make sites now a days. flash is pretty much an open source tool these days. There was a time when you believed that no one could see your code, but those days are over. They're good for streaming video and making banner advertisements on the web.

    • Couldn't agree less. I actually don't remember a time when people couldn't view your flash code.tommyo
