What could the reason be?

Well, I work on a windows computer at work, and if you cut something and don't paste, then cut something else, the original cut just restores itself to where it was. It's not rocket science. It doesn't go "into the ether". What is so wrong about this that apple decided that it wasn't a good idea?

and that windows behavior makes sense? if you want everything to work like windows.. use windows
- brains0
I didn't say I want everything to work like windows, but in this specific instance, yes, it does make sense. It's something you'd only have to do wrong once to understand.

It's just something that I wish would even be an option in system preferences. I don't want to go mucking about in terminal to get one of the most simple commands to work on files and folders. It should be a checkbox: "Enable File / Folder Cutting & Pasting".

drag and drop is a pain sometimes.
harlequino, you can cut them? It never lets me cut. Only copy.- Try copy, then delete original?harlequino
- That's stupid. I have complaints about this as well.mg33

i actually agree with you

CUT AND PASTE! It's all I want!

Thats not really a blunder though, is it?
I mean, if apple sold you a new computer and when you started it up it contained the secret to a new super powerful computer or all the managements emails or naked pictures of steve jobs, that would be a blunder.
This is just something you would like to see implemented.

Actually, that bothers me too. It takes more work to have to copy something, and then paste it, and then go back and delete the original file. Not a lot of work (obviously), but still not as efficient.

copy and pasty works fine
CUT and paste does not, but who cares
- brains0
It's so counter intuitive. It's like having to take a document to the photo copier, copy it, move it into a different folder, and take the original off the copy glass and throw it away. It's fuckin backwards.
