I'm in the market for a new audio receiver or a home theater system. Right now I have a Sony 5.1 surround audio receiver, with a sub and 5 speakers, but it's about 6 years old. I'd love to find one with HDMI (if those exist) or a home theater system with HDMI, 5.1, speakers, etc. Looking to spend under $200. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

you mean under $2000 right?
- Raniator0
HDMI + $200 = Sorry Sir, you must be kiddin'.
- slappy0
You can get a nice HDMI cable for 200 bucks :)
Seriously though, if you can get $600 look at a cambridge audio 5.1 receiver, they are decent.

Er, let me clarify...I need something decent enough for a roommate situation, not for a home theater. Is something like this so bad? It's similar to what I have now, except that it has HDMI.

Or this...

i don't think you can title a thread "audiophiles" and reference sony gear. this is the lowest end, but not bad. also not quite as cheap..
- you know sony is used A LOT in broacdast and recording studios, to produce the music and movies you watch..Meeklo
- so I think its safe to find sony gear on an audiophile thread.. :)Meeklo
- uh.. no. i worked at sony mastering in nyc, not a sony piece in sight.acescence
- this is consumer stuff we're talking about hereacescence
- tho they do turn up a lot in video housesacescence
- Yeah... the film groups I work with always have Sony, but they're quite absent in sound studios.ismith
- yeah, I was told that the sony mastering equipment is trash as well.MikeColdFusion

it's really good, I have one of their receiver with some infinity speakers and some good monster cables, it does the job niicely.
- pom1
monster cables, lol.
- I can get 80% off Monster Cables, so they've always been the best option for me. Although if I was paying full price... eugh. There's certainly better.
ismith - ... eugh. There's much better and much cheaper.ismith
- if you can get them 80% off, i would buy a shh load and sell them with a nice profit.akrokdesign

on the subject of cables, good price, excellent quality:

funny you don't like monster cables coz I also have a mc intosh audio system, yes the one with a lamp amplifier and it did come with monster cables.

will it really be so much better. isn't the speakers that really matters?
- everything does matter,
esp the frequency capabilities of the speakerstaosoul - Studio Monitors speakers are the besttaosoul
- yeah, i assume he/she has some standard sony speakers so might want to upgrade them instead. right?!akrokdesign
- studio monitors aren't necessarily the best, they are for flat, uncolored sound which you want in studio, but a bit of color or "musicality" can be pleasant and actually less fatiguing to listen to for long periodsacescence

Of course, this has little/nothing to do with a home stereo system.

Damn.
I just went to my step-brother's home who has been an audiophile since the mid 70s. I've always known he was in to this but I really spent some time discovering his world this morning. He sat me down and played some jazz. I was blown away by the quality of the sound. I gotta say, I am hooked and have the bug to want to start a system. Now to convince the wife that this is a "need" not a "want".
He told me to start with:
A little phonostage
Buffer USB (schiit wired)
Schiit Loki Dac
Vacuum Tube Amp (he builds them and has a couple ready to go for me)He said speakers are going to be a very expensive part of this too. I don't care if it takes five years to build this system, I gotta do this.
Here are some pics of his system i took

- Really nice amp but all together like that just looks like clutter.microkorg
- gah, nice setup. It's amazing how a little test drive can convince you to just WANT good sound all of a sudden.zarkonite
- the intriguing part was that i was only able to feel the bass, not really hear it. it was soothing.HijoDMaite

I'd get yourself onto eBay. Gumtree etc and buy a second hand system from someone.
Look for higher end stuff that's a few years old. If it's higher end then chances are the seller is an audiophile who's upgrading and wants to get shot of the older stuff.
