As of June 1st it will be illegal to have open alcohol on any public transport in London.... This means no red stripe on the bus on the way to Brick Lane, no can of Stella for the long district line ride.

It's like Boris made a law especially for Moth to reward him for all that campaigning!

    http://www.facebook.com/group.ph…

"On Sat May 31st we take over the circle line for a few hours, everyone sipping politely on their open can of booze for the last legal time. People of London, lets have one last hoorar!"

    Good.
London public transport is skanky enough without the sticky floors and beer soaked seats.

it actually wont be illegal on 1 june, just against the conditions of carriage. they have to write the legislation and get it passed through an act of parliament (i think) which takes more than a few weeks!! all they can do is ask you to leave the system or not let you but you wont be breaking any laws. just so you know.

"Thousands of people have marked the banning of alcohol on London transport with a party that ended with arrests, assaults and cancelled trains."

"Six Tube stations were closed, while police made 17 arrests. Six assaults were reported on Tube staff and police."

    Good job proving Boris right.

    • what's that? i couldn't here you over the clanking of your knitting needles.lvl_131/8
Sorry if i don't find drunken assaults on tube staff to be a good thing.JOSF2/8

ultimately, boris should unban alcohol on public transport, and then no longer give a fuck and just let everything go down the tubes for a while
and when things couldnt get any worse, take your little piggish heads and dip it in raw shit of life, for you primates to learn the difference between important things and trivial trash like this

    • Those last two phrases are sheer poetry.blaw

    to JOSF:
my point is that out of thousands of people that took part in this, only 17 people were arrested. that is less than 1%, and yet you make an overly broad statement saying that boris was right.

there are always idiots that carry things over the top, no matter what the situation is.

I guess the difference is that i have ridden the london undergroud for years, and have seen for myself what can happen when people bring alcohol on the trains. Spilling it everywhere, smashing empty beer bottles on the trains and station platforms, starting fights with innocent passengers. At the end of the day, what is the need to drink on the tube or bus?

    • fair enough. i don't have first-hand experience with it, but can see how it could be annoying.lvl_131/2
i guess it could be similar to people smoking here. that shit drives me nuts.lvl_132/2

"what is the need to drink" isn't really the point... the makers of the law have to show why it shouldn't be done.

For example.. in Germany you can have a beer in the cinema, which is nice! You could say "what is the need for that?" (what is the need?)

    Why?

    - Smashed bottles on trains and platforms
    - Spilled alcohol on seats
    - The smell that spilled alcohol leaves
    - Anti Social behavior

now you tell me a few reasons that you need to drink on a bus or tube? And also a cinema is a much more controlled environment, so that example is rather weak.

    • I don't have to tell you the reasons why we need to (thats my point). I agree with all your points and agree with the ban.ribit

I know that it's a minority, and that you will always get some drunk idiots on the tube. But allowing people to continue to drink as they use the service just adds to the problem. I guess the bottom line is that i can see what we gain from having this law, where as i can't see what people gain from being able to drink alcohol on the trains.

when you're an alcoholic like me, booze adds a bit of fun to every facet of yourday, including being on the train, makes the time pass quicker and the other riders seem more attractive...
