I am having a really tough time deciding if I should go freelance or stay at my interactive design/dev job. I've been here about 2.5 years, it feels like time, but its a tough move. I need some advice. doesn't have to be related, its Friday after all. Metaphors appreciated... or funny stories about quitting?

Go freelance, but, get some steady projects first.

If it feels right then do it, forget those scared little background thoughts!
I did it 2 years ago and was the best (career) move I ever made.
When I quit my job I had had enough of design and computers and offices altogether, I planned to get outdoors and do something. I told my boss I was quitting because non of this internet stuff really exists anyway. His face, oh his face!

You should have a couple monthly retainers locked up before making the move or a steady stream of side biz.
Also, determine your bottom line for money you need every month. Mortgage/Rent, power, water, innanet, etc.
Then flip a coin! hahahaha

See if you can go part-time at your job, and ease yourself into freelance.

Family health issues more or less forced me to go freelance, at least partially. Now i'm making more per job than i was at the studio AND i'm able to be here for my family should they need me. i've acquired (and continue to add to) a very healthy sleep debt, however
