yeah i get the prices are "reasonable" on the knock offs... i just dont get how it is allowable in the states here.
seems like a lawyers dream to sue the guys into non-existence

I am not sure either. It's funny, I just bought a licensed Noguchi table and knock-off Jacobson chairs (aptly called 'Jakes') from Room and Board. They sell real Herman Miller and fake Knoll.

Are the copyrights up on the designs? Its like, designers lifespan + 50 years or summet. Maybe thats the deal with the knockoffs?

It's really strange how people get away with it, although the knock-offs are never exactly the same as the originals, they are somewhat changed if you put them side by side. That must be part of it.

Most designs don't have trade dress.
Also keep in mind that just because a manufacturer has the rights to the name, doesn't mean that they're reproducing fully authentic designs. Vitra still manufacturers the Eames side chair, but they use PP instead of fiberglass - no doubt to cut costs. Modernica, on the other hand, doesn't hold the rights to the Eames name, but does have the proper presses and continues to use fiberglass...
