I do like FW for layouts but anything more intensive then it's PS.

i use it to optimize images and make masks for those images for use in Flash. also, it rocks for animated GIFs.

Remember PS was developed to work bitmaps for print and it's structure and work-flow (menu/options, features, etc) is set to optimize that kind of job;
FW was developed specifically for the Internet. It's obviously less powerful when it comes to bitmap treatment, but it integrates seemlessly with other tools within the family and also exports vectors fairly well to Freehand, which is also simpler than Illustrator. (Freehand smaller grids are not very reliable)

My CD got me into fireworks. Hated it at first, but love it now because how fast it is. The frames and the pages features are pretty awesome too. It is a buggy program, though...

I'm a master at both (no really) and fireworks is way more efficient for doing web layouts. The vector capabilities combined with bitmap capabilities beat what photoshop has done. In fairness If you are doing a grungy comp photoshop is better. Really I'd like to just use photoshop, but Adobe needs to get their shit together and make it right.

Fireworks is an amzing tool for web layouts. I usually start a project in Fireworks and ultimately export my files as a layered PSD (to share with other designers).

This is a funny one, as I recently moved company and found out that due to one of the designers here uses Fireworks, that it seems to be there standard, although when I was told it was the industry standard 'creative' tool, I laughed.
Fireworks is good, but it's never going to be better at creative work and hasn't got the depth of Photoshop, hence why there is two products.
I feel more 'technical' like Fireworks, but each to their own!

do they even still make fireworks anymore ?

Fireworks created better html back in the day: nested tables instead of table-stabilizing transparent images photoshop produced.
Strangely, Fireworks' JPG compression gave me worse quality than Photoshop's.
*gets crucified for saying 'table'

I use Fireworks exclusively. I prefer the UI and the fact that it's a far lighter app. The new Pages feature allows you to combine full site designs or several comps in one file.
The Master pages option allows you to quickly cascade global elements and allows for fast prototyping.
However, The type of work I do is supported well by Fireworks. If I was doing flashing, swooshing, glowing, bleep-bleep, oink-oink design, I would probably be somewhat limited by Fireworks.

Everything Fireworks can do Photoshop does better (in my view).
I also code exclusively by hand so any code features are no use to me.I have to be honest though, since CS came out i haven't even looked at Fireworks.
- Quickly sizing and laying out vector boxes and buttons? Nope PS is dogshit at thatmodern

Seriously Fireworks is pretty good at laying out websites, dogshit at brush related work and photo touchup but layouts / buttons and stuff that makes up 90% of websites you will get it done a hell of a lot faster in fireworks

fuck sake dont use fireworks to design websites - only use it do do the odd web banner. Use either photoshop or illustrator which i find better to use as its much effective for typography - unless you want to do chrome type of course

Don't forget how nicely Fireworks and Flash play together. Talk about making your life easy...

PS for retouching or photorealistic illustration
FW for webno doubts

I'd be interested in timing two designers one using FW and one using PS at laying out a site. i still think that FW is faster and superior for making web graphics.
