Anyone using one of these?
Can I use at as a Time Machine backup AND a place to archive projects off of my laptop?

Haven't look into it but, you can use almost any external hard drive as a backup with timemachine

i'm thinking about investing in one of these. as far as your question, email them

the concept is great. this thing will grow as your needs grow and keeps redundancy in case a drive or two fail.
what's not so hot is the bottleneck at the USB 2 ports, and the high cost. i'll wait for drobo 2.0. until then, a couple of external 500GBs would be more bang for the buck.

They just released a new version with Firewire 800...Dammit!
I ordered mine last week. Hopefully they can swap it or something.

I prefer network storage myself.
I have one of these http://www.netgear.com/Products/… although i got mine before Netgear brought them out.
1.5TB + 1Gb of internal ram.And that beyondRaid hardware sounds suspiciously like XRaid :D

YAYPaul, it's actually better than RAID in that I can just swap out the discs while the thing is running...watch the movie on their site, it really trumps most devices. Firewire 800 is going to be very nice
I've had 3 different raid NAS devices...upgrading them is a bitch. When you have lots and lots of data, expanding is sort of key.

they are fucking awesome. period. work so well
- YAYPaul0
XRaid isn't Raid either... It's a chip that lets you swap out drives while the device is on and exchange different sized drives. Which you can't do with standard Raid. That's why i said it was suspicious as XRaid (grrrr can't remember company name) has been around for ages. :)
I'd like to see a speed comparison between FW800 and Gigabit Ethernet.

Drobo fucking awesome... Um sort of, I mean if you want idiot proof and a cute black box + product name fine... But if you want something that works really well Try the Lacie Biggest Quadra, I mean HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TERABYTES.
I setup a drobo as a time machine backup for a group of computers, worked fine except for the ridiculously slow USB transfer speeds... No firewire forget it.
- //i love things that are not idiot proof. they have no place in technology.madirish

@hiimerik, the new version announced today has Firewire 800. You fail.

@YAYPaul, could it be the company that is selling the Drobo are the people behind XRaid? They say they've developed the technology.
