let's have another thread about faking tilt shift photography. since the ps lens blur filter came out it is actually not a technical problem anymore:before that filter photoshop was not able to generate progressive blur effects. i did this one without ps, using a script that processed the increasing blur with finalcut (rendering about 10 hours) :
a real tilt shift lens does not increase the actual depth blur. it also only fakes this impression in a simple way. so painting the the depth matte can be done very simple. i experimented with punching out elements, blurring them differently and composing them back together - but the results were by far not more impressive than a simple gradient - although it doesn't match the real depth.
after all it depends on the photography and the way the effect is used. obligatory link to the guy who started the real thing: http://www.miklosgaal.com

wired had an article on how to do this in photoshop:
http://www.wired.com/culture/lif…- this doesn't make an increasing blur, but an increasing opacity of a blurred layer.invisiblechamber

I have used this in photoshop to fake this effect:
duplicate level > blur > make selection > feather (big number) > delete- level = layerneverblink
- Except using that technique there is no gradual blur.5timuli
- yes there is.. the feather of the selection will provide it.neverblink

Never been a fan of this.

I like it. Can make something look more twisted and/or demented. I notice horror films use some kind of effect like this.
- yes, it seems to pull you closer to the object, wich is of course appropriate in horror films.invisiblechamber

the more it's done the less you will like it

some years ago i liked using it off photography, directly onto layouts.

It's a lot of fun using Lens Blur in a 750MB PSD.
- whoa, indeed.invisiblechamber
- and in 750-frame HD video sequences.invisiblechamber
- Haha, yeah. Might as well take a 16-hour nap.5timuli

Are people still doing this?
- no. this is a tech thread about a dead fashion.invisiblechamber
- still? this technique is a base part of photography that will never go awaysikma
- sure. but the hype is over. nontheless i might use it in future as i still like the use in illustration and animation.invisiblechamber
