In branding and print materials, is it necessary to include LLC or INC with the logo or on any print materials? I've recently had clients seem to have an urgency to want a giant LLC attached to their logo, not because they like it, but because they seem to think they need it. What's the general rule about using the LLC or INC or LTD with branding and print materials?

Put it to them like this. How many major brands have Inc. on the logo?

On official documents you have to. Its like using your real name (Company, LLC.) and your casual name (Bob instead of Robert).

thanks-that's what i've always thought and told the client, but the recent fervor for plopping a tacky LLC or INC at the end of a logo seems to have increased, so I wanted to check-

Nah, I only do it on official records, statements, invoices, mail, etc... anything for presentation-purposes only I never suffix the LLC.

you no longer need LLC after the company name. I chose not to include it in my company's name (seems cheap and temporary to me).
Not sure about Inc.

actually, both of my companies do not have LLC anywhere in the titles.
I'll be changing one to a S-Corp soon and don't plan on changing the name.
(FYI - it was my lawyer and city biz reg that told me I don't need the LLC - this changed a few years ago, at one point it was required, I believe)

yes the company or business logo has nothing to do with the company name (that should be displayed on the official documents).. they are totally separate things even if they *might* look similar...

Keep in mind a business card or a flyer doesn't have to even include the company name... they can be just a promotional/info device for the brand or service...
An email signature doesn't need to have the full company name, and can just use the brand name, or logo, or nothing...
An official letter or official email has to have the full company name somewhere, such as in the footer (the full company name actually includes the Inc, LLC, Limited, Ltd, Pty. Ltd. etc).

and in the UK, an official letter/official email also has to include the company number, country of registration, and registered business address.

ribit - my company's name is official, without listing the 'LLC'. On official documents, including the LLC registration, there is no 'LLC' letters in the name.
