Just a possible opportunity in the near future
Wondering what the general thought is about this city...I know there area few Pittsburgh designers on this board.
What's the vibe and city life like?
Is it clean, friendly, cost of living, what are the winters like (live near Miami right now) etc...Not so worried about jobs...because a move their would be to follow an opportunity there
thoughts are appreciated

I've only visited once but was pretty impressed with the city. It's small but has a decent arts scene. The Warhol Museum alone is worth it. Real estate is ridiculously cheap and winters suck.
- +4 (one for each on-the-money point).blaw
- kind of like Ottawa, actually. We have more museums though.Jaline
- We have an alarming amount of museums though, haha. And we are benefiting from teh Greenhouse Effect.flavorful
- I think Ottawa has the most in Canada though, so I'm guessing that's more than Pittsburgh. But not sure.Jaline

Went to college there_did 4 years in 3. Couldn't wait to get out. I call it "The Black Hole" of my life. Chain smoking, fat people, horrible public transportation. Cost of living is amazing_Rent was never over 300 a month.

Grew up there, and loved it for the most part. Not that clean, kinda cold, but great parks, cheap living, and a lot of great food. Look in Shadyside, South Side, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, or Squirrel Hill for places to live.
I worked with these guys for a couple years before moving down here to DC:

My sister went to school at Duquesne so I was out there a few times. But I believe there have been some significant improvements to the city to try to bump their economy. From what I see I like, except the fucking Penguins just knocked out the Rangers, so that kind of sucks.
- So you mean it's actually good for the city.Jaline
- Ya. I meant "But I believe there have been some significant improvements to the city since I was there like 20 yrs ago?!?! whoops.stoplying
- I mean the Penguins winning :)Jaline

Here's the scope on PA winters... they are really not that bad. Not too cold until January and Spring has generally shown it's head a few times before April. So not so bad.
Unless you come from someplace warm, say, the Carolinas. Then you'll find them a bit too long, a bit too cold.
And if you come from someplace damn-near tropical, say, Miami, you'll have a rough first one. But then you'll become a tough old salt and be a better person for it.

I was in Pittsburgh for 4 years. I wouldn't move back unless there was a *crap load of cash attached. I have friends who grew up there and love it.... but it's not for me.

I'm incredibly biased, but Pittsburgh is a great place to live.
Great place to live as it's cheap compared to other cities (of course I'm paying an arm and a leg for another year because I'm a moron). Relatively clean, and is a lot cleaner than it was when I was growing up for sure.
For some reason I feel like I have to address (and concur) with jteore's post that most.
If you don't like smoking, Pittsburgh will make you absolutely abhor it. Think of a like a Paris stereotype the amount of smoking that goes on, but it doesn't look classy in the least, haha. We banned smoking for like a glorious weekend, but no one gave a shit and did whatever they wanted anyway.
But hey, as long as you don't smoke and don't mind washing your clothes, taking showers, and being naturally kempt - you'll be fine.
Fat people. Yeaaaah, Pittsburgh has a lot of ugly people. Also has some great looking people (i.e. me), and as long as you don't hang out in places where fat people potentially congregate that's an easy pass.
And as far as the sports go, it is one of the most insane sports crazy towns you'll ever come across which is either a blessing or a curse.
We have a pretty high bum capita despite statistics, and a lot of destitute poor people ... we have a pact with them kind of like pigeons who poop on statues. We look the other way when they're jacking off/shitting in the middle of a sidewalk on a Sunday; they get out of the way of our cars and don't harass you for spare change as much as you'd think.
Have I thought about moving? Yes. A lot actually, but I've never been able to pull the trigger. Might be the comfort factor, but Pittsburgh has everything I need.
Plus of all the cities I've been in, they're the only town that can keep up with my pace of drinking. Sans my guess would be Milwaukee, however, I haven't made a pilgrimage there yet.
Good art/music scene. There is a festival almost weekly (it's Greek Festival rite now), we love fireworks and have an alarming amount of firework nites, the winters are highly criticized but we've really been benefitting from teh Greenhouse Effect. I can't stress that enough.
When I was growing up it would start snowing on Halloween almost regularly and last until after St. Patrick's Day.
Now? Sometimes it doesn't start snowing until January and is usually done by Valentine's Day (though that doesn't mean it's not cold).
Spring/Summer/Fall are great as it never gets too hot or too cold. I was outside until 2 in the morning last nite in a t-shirt.
Uhm ... I don't think I did too good of a job here but it has its pros/cons like every other city. One of the pros is that we have an airport that flies anywhere in case you want to get away for a bit, and the only con is that it's pretty far away from the actual city, haha.
We were voted most livable city in America last year which is misleading and absolutely true. We're not the highest in any one area, and we're not the lowest in any one area in fact we're pretty consistent on everything that most people would want a city to have in that there is a low crime rate, housing is cheap, and there are a lot of fun stuff to do.
I'll probably post more, and check out other Pittsburgh threads with the filter I think I went on on an essay tirade about stuff to do within one section of town the last time someone said they were coming in for a weekend.
- Thank goodness we banned smoking here. I think a lot of places have bums. More in larger and warmer cities.Jaline
