how do I make (generate) audio waveforms start and stop at given frames rather than cover the whole clip start to finish?
- Meeklo0
you can add a keyframe with volume level (toggle hold if you want the value to increase/decrease instantly, no fading)
- Meeklo0
if you have multiple audio tracks (maybe you have samples of only the parts you want to use from the original track) just move them around the timeline so they play when you want
- Dr_Rand0
thanks--will try
- Meeklo0
Add layer markers on the audio timeline, this is a trick I learned recently, (select audio layer) add marker) double click on marker to insert name, example "drum solo" or bass starts, then you dont need to have the waveform display taking all that space
- chossy0
you can also edit the duration of the clip with the alt and square brackets button, it trims the layer to your play head alt left square is your in alt right square is your out :D

^
I assumed he wanted multiple audio parts from the same track, but if that is not the case, then chossy has the best (and easiest) answer

I have video footage with mixed sound, but want to overlay black sections of video with waveforms from alternate mix. How about "new solid" with waveform filter in just those sections-- use alternative audio layer but keep it muted?
- Dr_Rand0
in other words, create a new "short" solid layer with waveform filter targeting the alternative mix, but silence the alternative mix so that you hear the original video sound while "seeing" the alternative mix?
- chossy0
you don't need to make a new solid layer matey just shift your footage along a bit then apply your new mix to the space left, unless I am mistaking you but you have a video with a mix then you want a bit of black with some different mix on it?....
- Meeklo0
so you have
2 video tracks (one w/ audio)?
- Dr_Rand0
I need separate layers for each waveform segment, right?
- oozie0
i'm not entirely sure what you're trying to do but you might want to make a precomp for the second audio stuff to start
- Meeklo0
Ok, I think I know what you are doing.
you added the solid layers for us to understand what parts of the audio you want to hear correct? if not, I'm still lost.
- Meeklo0
lower the volume value to 0 when you don't want to hear it, if you right click/ toggle keyframe there is no fade time, the change is instant, from 7dbs to 0 dbs to 7dbs
