To CMS or not to CMS…

Is CMS really just suited for Blog style sites or is it practical to use on a Portfolio/showcase website? From what I can see the CMS softwares are all geared towards the blog.
If a site will only be updated 4/5 times a year is it worth the effort.
Cheers.

Good morning Ted, how are your good selves this am?
It is of course entirely up to you :)
If anything a CMS would make a lot more sense when you only update irregularly - it means less trying to remember what goes where in your template.
Then again if you decide against it I am 100 on your side too my friend.

I am good that you. Good morning to you good sir.
The site is only small and very basic in terms of programming. When it goes live it will have approx 20 pages. I haven't built a CMS site yet but I'm under time pressure to get it done.
So I guess my real question is should I get this job done or invest the time in learning how to set up a CMS site on such a small project.

In which case, without wishing to sway you one way or t'other, it may be simpler and quicker to make the site without a CMS, then at some future conjuncture ,when and if you learn how to, implement one.
Good luck on your quest, may a smile lay siege to your face on all of your travels and last but not least:

there is somewhat of a middle ground.. which I used in the past. I made a seperate folder (named the same as the title of the project) for each project and with the images and a description text in a simple txt file. Then I'd have my index page read in those folders dynamicly. If I wanted to add a project I used ftp to create a folder, upload the images and the description file and - done.
- clients love doing that!mimeartist
- this is what i wanted to do but don't know much about php(?) to do it.menos
- any good tuts around for this exactly?menos
- Some do, mime - I have one who's happy to update his entire site from a series of php includes, each w/ a diff lang.detritus

Thanks for the feedback. I guess it's something I'll have to learn. I'm leaning toward Drupal as it seems you can implement it on any website design rather than using an existing template.

It really depends on the CMS. For instance a few portfolio versions ago i was using Wordpress, it was ok, but to get the look and functionality i wanted was a real mission hacking code. So i moved back to static pages, then static pages with ajax (current state).
Now i'm in the process of writing a bespoke CMS for my portfolio that has all the fields i need and is built around the functionality i want from the ground up. Now a bespoke data driven CMS is hugely useful to me, whereas a templated blog style CMS wasn't.

CMS for flash XML base site?
Anyone?
Cheers!- which one will not? anything that provides a feed (xml, rss, ect) can be used to push through a Flash display.madirish
- note: BLOG ENGINES ARE NOT A CMSmadirish
- they manage content dont they? I mean they do offer other services as well but...ian00
- No, one manages 'entries' and stores them in a db/flatfile format. the other manages content globally; drastically different.madirish

I've built my own...
allows for image upload, keywords, image color mode, image focus mode (not telling you what that is :) ) articles, categories, sub-categories, image captions, blah blah... and suits the type of sites I build, plus each time there is a new feature, I can then use it for my next project if need be.

hey neverblink,
i've been looking for something like that actually. any good links or tutorials around for that? thanks!

I can't decide whether it's a good or a bad thing that the terms CMS and Blog could be so easily confused. It speaks volumes, regardless - I'm just not sure what it speaks volumes of.

if:
- you have more than one webpage
- planning on updating the content more than once a year
- see possibly plugging in various bits of functionality in future
- want a way to re-design/skin, w/o re-developing in futurethen:
USE A CMS

madirish sorry to disagree.
Blog engines can be a CMS. It all depends on your definition of a CMS but for me it serves to manage content and that's exactly what you can do with wordpress, plus their API makes it quite expandable you can make it do whatever you need.- fine to disagree- hell, i applaud it!madirish

Well, I think Madirish is talking about enterprise level cms systems, which certainly are a far different and serious beastie than your install of wordpress

to a lesser degree, i am. but, i still think using a blog engine is like using photoshop for layouts and design; it is a tool band-aided to support a miss-use of fundamental training and/or planning.
i have NOTHING against wordpress, 'blog engines', or the like- truly. what i do take issue with is the belief and promotion that the technical framework used to support and publish a log of entries of 'content' can suffice and be passed off as a 'Content Management System' of a website. small detail or riff maybe, but there are fundamental differences in managing content from the data-level for display, and that which stems from the post-stamp.
- Why is Photoshop bad for layouts and design again?TheFatBaron
- ha, after reading the comment here a few times, I generally agree yeahFizik
- blogging engines work for me (sometimes) because I still go through the planning/thought process of designFizik
