this is no question - Jordan all the way.
they have relaxed defenses so much since when MJ played. you can't hand check now, and they call fouls on shit that they just let pass back in the day.
put MJ up against the current defense tactics / rules in his prime and he'd dwarf his own numbers.

i always call sidney crosby 'cobe bryant' for some reason. probably because he's from a neighborhood called Colby. i was half in the bag the other night i said cobe bryant like 5 times talking about hockey and my friend had to point it out.

I think there's a case to be made for Magic Johnson being the greatest ever, but he was laid low by HIV.

Jordan set a standard, that in the mind of everyone that saw him play, will never, ever be superseded. no doubt, the fans, media, brand endorsements, entertainment sources, even some of his best opponents in the league sensationalized his skills.
he portrayed the perfect athlete - looks, style, sportsmanship, competitiveness, passion - everything that we want out of playing a sport, he offered. and to attain that greatness for yourself, you only had to tune in to a bulls game, wear a pair of air jordans, drink gatorade, or stick your tounge out while making a fade-away jumper over your opponent.
there are too many years of built up sensationalism around this one human figure to expect even an outstanding player such as kobe, with a few championships under his belt to overcome it all.
