straplines impact the bottom line?

having a debate with a colleague on whether a company strapline has any impact on the companies turnover. my argument is no i.e. Microsofts is currently "Your Potential. Our Passion"
any thoughts?
BTW i have tried to make it clear to him that a strapline is not an advertising tagline.

I think your right in many ways. but i hate any company that advertise or i see online that dose not make clear sense of what they do or what they offer. I think this most use i get out of a strap line. unless its really really smart. and has some cool double meanings and interesting word play . i think there pointless for any company who's has a clear identity of what they do.

I fucking hate straplines. Why the fuck does every ISO-chasing corporate entity feel the need to pithily present the sum of their greed in a trite 6 word line? Most of it is vapid nonsense that only serves to successfully fill up my brain space with a rage bordering on psychotic.

how do you know that Microsoft's strapline doesn't cleverly tap in to the "goals and aspiarations" yadayada of their consumers? how do you know that it doesn't make people see them as less of a nerdy software company or horrible multinational? what if directly linking their products to your day to day in that tone positions them more favorably in the market, considering the cliquey non-tech slant their main competitor takes?
