I've worked mostly with invisionboard forums in the past as they are a well built option and pretty easy to skin.
My recommendation in terms of designing is to not stray too far from what is a recognisable layout for users. I always found that when skinning boards, I was stripping out lots of bits and pieces so you can simplify the layout to make it look cleaner if you get the chance.
